"Lightning" Lee Murray

Of all of the legends in modern street fighting, there are only a few that really impress me. One of those guys, perhaps the greatest of those guys, is "Lightning" Lee Murray.

Some may remember Lee Murray from UFC 46. Lee was brought into the UFC to fight Jorge Rivera. The reputation and the back-story behind this fight legendary. Though it's not necessarily between Murray and Rivera, it's between Murray and a man much more well known in MMA, "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz.

The story goes that after UFC 38, Tito and Lee ran into each other in a London nightclub, both drunk. They started to fight and Lee punched Tito in the face, knocking down Ortiz, and then kicked him in the head. In the words of Pat Miletich, who is one of the witnesses, "Lee lit him up like a Christmas tree and kicked his head like a football."

Lee destroyed Rivera in one of the most dominant displays by a British fighter ever in the UFC. It's certainly one of the best submission victories in the history of the UFC middleweight division.

After the fight with Rivera, Lee never returned to the UFC and lost to current UFC middleweight champ Anderson "The Spider" Silva. Anderson could not finish the Brit, but was the last fight of Lee Murray's professional MMA career.

Lee dropped off of the radar for a few years until he was stabbed in London club. He suffered from a punctured lung and a severed artery. Lee was resusitated 4 times by the doctor and give a large amount of blood. He survived the stabbing.

On the 25th of June, 2006, Murray was arrested in Morocco in connection with the largest British cash robbery, known as the Securitas depot robbery. The amount stolen was roughly 53 million Pounds. For those of you who aren't familiar with the pound (I'm not either), that's 92.5 million American dollars, or 78 million Euro.

Not exactly a standup guy, but a great fighter and an interesting character.
