Bellator announces inaugural light heavyweight tournament for fourth season
Bellator Fighting Championships will soon name a light heavyweight champion.
The tournament-based promotion today announced that its upcoming fourth season will host a 205-pound bracket, with the winner of the eight-man field earning Bellator's first light heavyweight title and $100,000.
The tournament is slated to begin in March, and six of the eight participants have already been selected, according to today's announcement.
"We've wanted to add a light heavyweight world championship tournament since season one but wanted to ensure that when we did it, we had a great group fighting for the title," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney stated in today's release. "Now, we do.
"One of the best parts of my job is handing over the Bellator world title belt to a new champion, and I'll have the pleasure of doing it again this upcoming season."
Bellator declined to name any of the participants in the light heavyweight tournament, but announcements are expected shortly.
Bellator's fourth season was already expected to feature tournaments in the middleweight, welterweight, lightweight and featherweight divisions. With the addition of the light heavyweight tournament, the middleweight bracket has been scrapped for season four according to Rebney, who revealed the new plan on this past week's episode of ESPN2's "MMA Live."
Bellator's 12-week fourth season begins in March and airs on MTV2.
Bellator is awesome, with the new MTV deal we should start seeing some great things from them as usual. Discuss.
