Breaking into M.M.A. Training Log

Hello all, I've been mostly lurking these forums for awhile now. A little introduction: I'm 20 years old, just wrapping up doing a little world travel. While I was in Thailand I got involved with a Muay Thai training camp called Tiger Muay Thai, and trained pretty hard for a month and loved it. I decided to see where this passion can take me, and have decided to aim to fight in my first M.M.A. fight at a local amateur venue in my town called Valley Fight this coming December. This means I have a lot of work to do.

I will be training at a local M.M.A. gym called Revolution Chilliwack, as well as training with my friend who also wants to fight within the year.

I'm 20 years old, Southpaw, 6'4 about 195lbs, muscular build from years of weightlifting (I've got an enormous journal on a bodybuilding website but alas, there's no point talking M.M.A. on a bodybuilding forum, so here I am) but relatively weak cardio, other weaknesses include an occassional occurence of shin splints and contact lenses. I've only trained Muay Thai for a month and that's basically all my training besides a bit of self taught boxing.

I'm wrapping up my travels now, sitting in Bangkok for a few more days. I checked out a nearby Muay Thai gym but it was a hole in the ground with some mats and wasn't cheap, so **** it. I'm doing bodyweight exercises and shadowboxing in my room to help maintain what I can.

I go home soon so training resumes on August 1st as I enroll in the MMA gym back home and in addition begin my own training with a partner to keep the total training time to about 3.5 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Training is 4 weeks on followed by 1 week rest, each week is 5 days training, alternating between 2 days set out like this:

Day 1 - Technique
Stretch
Shadowboxing
Hit Pads
Standup Sparring
Rolling
Stretch
Go to class

Day 2 - Conditioning
Stretch
Skipping
Weight Training (Divided into Push/Pull/Leg days focusing on functional strength, explosive power, and endurance.)
Heavy Bag
Speed Bag
Stretch
Go to class

Classes are as follows:
Mon - Beginner Jiu-Jitsu
Tue - M.M.A.
Wed - Beginner Jiu-Jitsu
Thur - Boxing + Muay Thai
Fri - Boxing + Muay Thai + M.M.A
Sat - Rest
Sun - Rest

Going to ease myself into it and build momentum; first week just go to the classes, second week go to the classes and do training every second day, then by the third I'm doing the full routine. Also going to start light on my weights and build momentum over the weeks as powerlifters do.

I've also wrote up a flexible diet that I believe I can maintain pretty easily. I'll add the details once I've gone through with it for awhile in case any changes need to be made. What's important is the 6000 mostly healthy calories to exceed my maintenance level for a gradual weight gain.

Supplements are Protein/Creatine Monohydrate/Multivitamin/Fish Oil, considering a pre-workout supp like N.O. Xplode but don't really need the extra hit to the wallet or a caffeine dependency, so we'll see on that one.

I picked up all my gear to train out here in Thailand for nice and cheap. Got 16oz gloves, shin guards, wraps, mouth guard, and headgear. My friend has bought all of these things as well as some Thai kicking pads and a round timer, so we're all equipped and ready to go.

I'm aiming for December for my premier amateur M.M.A. bout. Wish me luck and feel free to pass on advice. I'm gonna tear a hole into this guy. :thumb02:

Phew, been way too long. Class was just drills where one guy has an advantageous position and is trying to submit while the other guy defends. I did pretty well and don't think I got submitted, maybe once? Then just rolled the rest of the class.

I don't remember the rolls much, I tapped a big white with an ezekiel from mount and an armbar. I had a stalemate/lost a round to a blue belt with a really good open guard that I couldn't beat. Had a good stalemate with a pretty chill brown belt.

I almost died of exhaustion and had to stall alot but managed to not sit out a round. Then I felt like shit afterwards and had to sit for 20 minutes in the change room before I could find my feet and walk home. Promotions are tomorrow night but I'll miss it as I'm working.

I have my first two days off this weekend in around a month. Thank god!

Tech was a half butterfly sweep. In butterfly, partner steps a foot up to work a pass, get a butterfly hook under, hip escape in the same direction, lift at that hook while crossing their sleeves and steering them to the sweep side. Started to get the hang of it, definitely an in the moment type of sweep.

Drilled from butterfly guard and then rolled. Rolled a skilled white belt with a very good open guard, got swept but scrambled well and caught an armbar that he eventually gave up on. Rolled a much smaller purple belt who I now call Giant Slayer. Had a very good back and forth with him trying to pass his elaborate guard and keep a position on him. Hip bumped into mount for a short amount of time and took his back later for an even shorter time.

Exhausted. 42 celcius on the mats when class started. My membership there is almost up.

Drilled positionally and did well. Rolled for the rest of the two hours. That was a marathon and I definitely got in the flow of it and had some very good competitive rolls. 2 purples and like 4 blue belts for 10 minute rounds. I couldn't piece together the rolls if I tried. Know I got an arm triangle and ezekiel from back. Tapped to a collar choke and an armbar. Got a big toe to the face and now there's a mouse under my eye, at least I'm not in the ER getting a big toe pulled out of my eye socket.

Only came for second hour of class. All rolling. Once again endurance was shit, I stopped taking 5-htp so that should clear up shortly. Luckily I got lots of rounds with white belts to beat up. Had a stalemate with a good blue but couldn't do shit to his guard.

Weight room membership is up in a few days, hopefully I can get one more session in. Then I think I'll switch to focusing on endurance and see if I can reduce this awful feeling I get when I go too hard. Also wouldn't mind adding in some muay thai.

Pushup Burpees (5xrounds, 3mins on 1min off)
1 -32
2 -25
3 -21
4 -18
5 -17
Total-113

I knew it would be bad and it sure was. Probably worst performance to date. I tried to stop worrying about it and just worry about finishing the workout. Interesting to put what I've been feeling lately down to quantifiable numbers.

Technique was an escape from side control I haven't seen before. Far side arm reaches to their belt at their back. Near side arm goes down to their far knee and grips. Lift at both grips will sort of shrimping yourself down. Move to belly down and get up on your knees. If they don't whizzer you can attack turtle, if they do then sit through for guard or half guard. Was working pretty good for me in drilling. Just one round today with another blue, lots of fun back and forth though he was very good and caught me in a collar choke.

Didn't feel awful today, just light headed afterwards, but that's nothing.

More ***** cardio

Shadowboxing
3x3 min rounds straight punches
2x3 min rounds checking kicks

Just trying to attack shoulder and groin endurance because I know they've fallen way off since not doing striking. Will get back to that soon enough but for now short and sweet will have to suffice.

Tech was knee slide pass through de la riva. Drilled positionally from de la riva. Stayed for the second hour to roll, taking a few rounds off.

Good back and forth with a purple, stalemate. Rolled him again later and got an arm triangle in top half guard right out of Ryan Hall's dvd that I've been watching. Also got a choke from his back and an armbar. Rolled a smaller blue and finally passed his guard, got his back, armbar from back. Rolled another smaller blue, got another arm triangle and another armbar from back. I think there was another round that I can't remember right now. Rolled a half round with a big purple, he swept me from half guard but I bridged him over and passed guard to end the short round.

Feeling quite a bit better today, thank god. Just gotta keep at it. Sprained my ankle a bit but it doesn't seem too bad.

Drilled for first hour, guard break and torreando pass, reguard from side control, side control step over to mount. Second class was all rolling, got a couple back and forth rounds with three very good blue belts, played with a spazzy white belt on his first day, I think that's it. Neck is still giving me warning signs but for the most part has been feeling better.

Back in the hometown on interviews, lots of rolling at the old gym where it all began. Lucked out and my original bjj instructor that gave me my blue belt was in town. Real cool seeing everyone. Rolled two purples, two browns, a blue, and a black. Got tapped by everyone once but the smaller brown that I did well positionally on, locked on an arm triangle but he doesn't need to breath apparently. Great class and I'll try to get in as much as I can while I'm here.
