The story is supposed to be about you and why you left/where you are.
Varric is telling your story, not a story about some evil bad guy or some huge battle - The seeker (the woman talking to Varric in the present) wants him to explain to her Hawke's story from the start, to where he left.
They wanted to go away from your cliche "big bad guy, work your way to defeat him" kind of story, and just tell the story of Hawke and all the things he did/took part of.
Many don't like it, many do, it's sort of a certain taste thing.
