If the UFC has its way, there will be monitors present beside each judge at next month's UFC 130 in Las Vegas.
Marc Ratner, the UFC's Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, informed MMA Fighting that the organization has formally submitted a request to the Nevada State Athletic Commission to install monitors as a backup viewing option for the judges assigned to score the bouts at UFC 130.
"I've emailed [NSAC Executive Director] Keith [Kizer] and asked him to put the request on the next agenda. We believe these monitors will be another look to help with the judges," Ratner wrote via e-mail.
Last week, MMA Fighting reported that no plans were in place in Nevada to place monitors for the judges to look at during fights.
According to the UFC, California is the only state to ever provide monitors for judges while scoring MMA bouts.
When MMA Fighting asked NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer if he would be open to the idea, Kizer replied, "Maybe." He added that it was up to a promoter to formally ask for the monitors to be present.
"A promoter can petition (to allow judges to have personal monitors,) and we'd put it on the agenda," Kizer told MMA Fighting last week. "The UFC is well aware of the process but has chosen not to ask in the past."
UFC 130 takes place May 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The main event is Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard 3 for the UFC lightweight title.
Yup, one of many travesties in modern day MMA judging. Agreed, some judges are terrible, but sometimes weird decisions can also come about because of a lack of visual... It's really sad actually
finally, they always say how hard it is to see the ground game when you're on the floor next to the cage, i really dont understand why they dont always use monitors
not only that but damn we really need new judges, seriously, i thought that when ppl said these judges dont understand the game they were exagerating but i saw a interview with a fighter, dont remember who it was
but he was saying how some judges really have no clue whats going on to the point where hes heard them ask another judge what the fighter was doing on the ground
i really couldnt believe they were that ignorant, how can these judges score fights? thats why wrestling is so dominant, they understand TDs and top control, but thats where it stops
this brings to question many decisions over the years and just how accurate they would be under better rules and better judges
Wait, what?! They didn't have monitors? No wonder we get these crappy split decisions. One judge can probably see what's going on while the other two can only see their backs.
This is great but let's not pretend like there haven't always been giant 100 inch screens all around the arena showing the action. I dont think this will be as significant of a change as people think. The real problem is the ignorance of judges with respect to anything outside of boxing.
It seems to me the judges should be moved from cage side and put in a secluded room with monitors showing every camera angle available. In fact they should have recorded feeds so they can pause or rewind if they want. They would have to put some limits on that so that the judges decision wouldn't take forever. I for one say use all the technologies available.
i wish they would push for monitors monitoring the judging threwout the hole fight. hold the judges accountible for bias judging. winning the 3rd round doesn't win you the hole fight, or at least it shouldn't.
No they turn them in at the end of the fight. I don't like the idea that a lot of people have of showing the scores after each round. K1 does that and I think it ruins it a little bit, yeah we have some bad decisions but imagine watching a complete five round war that could go either way, but already knowing who won when they read the card. It would take a little bit away from the fight, imo at least.
I hope they give the judges direct camera feeds any not Zuffa ppv production feeds, wonder if UFC will try to sway judges decisions with bias end of round replays.
Yeah, i read this earlier...about time too! But, as you say..when you have guys like Cecil Peoples judging, then it won't matter, even if he had three 60" 1080p HD READY LCD screens in front of him it still would'nt make a difference to his view of a clear decision.
