The concept is essentially to get your opponent to focus or react to something other than your shot. For example, punches to the head in order to get them to cover, this effects their posture and leaves their legs more open for a double leg.

Another example is clinch work with an underhook on one side. This becomes a drop down to a single.

The combinations are endless. Again what is important is getting them to think/react to something. When using strikes, they don't necessarily have to land as long as the opponent covers. Jab, cross, hook with the momentum of the left hook being used to go for the shot.
