My advice would be to play the first one then, it's fairly cheap as it's been out for years and it's very fun, Gears 3 is the best of the series but I would check out the first, see if you like it, then get 2 and then 3.
Plus something happens in 3, and if you've played all three games it'll make the big moment in Gears 3 all that more meaningful.
