I shrimp out to one side then overhook on his arm that's closer to me in the whizzer configuration. Then I swing my legs out underneath and get back to my knees.

Ooh, I see. I personally find looking for an underhook rather than an overhook is more efficient. If your opponent has an underhook, they have a lot more ability to control you.
But yes, watch the video. The most basic escapes from side mount are shrimping out, getting your knee across his belly, then getting half guard, or shrimping out and then stepping your leg/base out and going to turtle. You should drill those two escapes very often.
