Gabe Ruediger medically suspended, but CSAC can't stop April 7 SFL bout

Ruediger is among several fighters announced to fight at Super Fight League 2, which takes place April 7 in Chandigarh, India.

In the eyes of the California State Athletic Commission, however, the lightweight should be benched for the YouTube-streamed event.

Ruediger will still be within a 45-day suspension (with no contact during training for 30 days) when he meets UFC vet Paul Kelly (12-4) at next month's SFL event.*

Scott Caitlin (5-6) knocked out Ruediger (17-8) past Friday at "BAMMA USA: Badbeat 5" in Commerce, Calif. Ruediger could not be reached for comment. Super Fight League CEO Ken Pavia wrote via text that he would "look into it."

The CSAC has no jurisdiction over events held outside the U.S. CSAC representative Sarah Waklee told ( Ruediger's name will be added to a national registry that tracks fighters' administrative and medical suspensions. She said the commission could ask him to provide an additional neurological exam or take a greater say in his next opponent if he again fights in California. More seriously, he could be summoned before them to answer why he fought under suspension.*

But the commission is limited to the actions it can take.*

"Speaking apart from the commission, I would hope that you would think about your health and safety before you think about a paycheck," Waklee said. "But unfortunately, there's nothing we can do to stop them."

Ruediger is not the first to bypass a possible suspension. In 2009, current UFC heavyweight Antonio Silva fought in the now-defunct Japanese promotion World Victory Road/Sengoku while under a yearlong suspension issued by the CSAC when he failed a post-fight drug test in July 2008. (Silva, who maintained his innocence, was unsuccessful in appealing the suspension.)

Following his loss this past Friday, Ruediger tweeted, "I gave up.tonight."

A veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter 5," Ruediger gained notoriety when he was cut from the show for failing to make weight for his opening-round fight against Corey Hill. He bounced back after the show and went 7-2 in regional competition. But a return to the UFC in late 2010 was short-lived when he suffered back-to-back losses at UFC 118 (Joe Lauzon) and UFC 126 (Paul Taylor).

Prior to the reality show, Ruediger made his professional octagon debut at UFC 63, where he lost to Melvin Guillard by first-round TKO.
