The Vikings are coming to Nottingham.
Multiple sources have told Fighters Only today that the Icelandic prodigy Gunnar Nelson has provisionally accepted an offer to join the ranks of the UFC.
Nelson is 23 years old and a black belt under Renzo Gracie. He has a professional MMA record of 9-0-1, with the draw being his first fight. Six of his wins are by submission, the others by stoppage. He is based in Iceland, where he trains and teaches at the Mjolnir academy, but since his late teens has spent much of his life travelling to Europe and the USA to train with top-level coaches.
Fans of ADCC grappling will know him from his win over Jeff Monson in the open-weight category last year. Gunnar is a welterweight, Monson a veteran heavyweight. Nelson's black belt was achieved in four years; from blue to brown belt he was training with SBG black belts Jon Kavanagh (Ireland) and Karl Tanswell (UK).
Nelson has been linked with a UFC move for the last several years but he preferred to bide his time and gain experience before joining such a tough league. Sources say he has been offered a spot on the UFC Nottingham card taking place on September 29 in Nottingham UK.
Pretty excited about this!
