You don't have to use it like an idiot, swinging for the fences the whole time.
Think of it as an incredibly lo-o-onng reach advantage/jab combo. If you hold the bat right, knife-dude won't be able to get out of the way of the very end of the bat zipping straight out and back.
Imagine what that would do to your nose/eye/throat- how your body would react involuntarily, and how exposed you'd be for the hey-maker at that point.
