Well, here's an advantage of weight cutting a day prior to the fight...fighters in different divisions can challenge each other and exceptions don't have to be made. An example would be, GSP fighting Anderson at 185lbs, although it's an advantage for Silva the general consensus is that it's a fair fight because both fighters weigh the same.

So I would argue weight cutting exists for marketing purposes and traditional purposes. Personally, I'd rather they have it on the same day as the fight, so I could see Jon Jones black ass have to fight Cain velazques lol
