Anderson would not hold back if he could finish Sonnen right away with strikes, of course. His performance was off that night, but in the end he submitted Sonnen as he would prefer that night and pleased his BJJ mentor for sure.
Actually, the submission itself was just the cherry on the cake regarding his Jiu Jitsu, because it was his BJJ skills and very defensive guard who prevented him from getting hurt while having Sonnen on top for the majority of the fight.
