One month after his upset loss to perennial UFC contender Jon Fitch (24-4-1 MMA, 14-2-1 UFC), Brazilian welterweight prospect Erick Silva (14-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) is itching to get back to action.
Earlier this month, Silva's manager, Wallid Ismail, announced his client would return at February's UFC 156 event against an opponent yet to be named.
Silva says that quick return was at his behest, and he's anxious to keep his performance at a high level. And while he knows that open slot won't be filled by Fitch, he does believe he'll someday get a chance to avenge the result.
"I have no idea who my opponent will be; I don't choose them," Silva told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) through his interpreter and sponsorship PR representative Colin Foster. "I expect to know who it is in a few weeks and then to start working even harder. But I believe at some point of my career I'll have the rematch against Fitch."
Fitch and Silva fought on the main card of October's UFC 153 event in Rio de Janeiro. The 28-year-old Silva entered the matchup with considerable hype and nearly finished the fight with a second-round rear-naked choke. However, Fitch somehow survived the hold and went on to win a rousing unanimous decision in an entertaining contest that was ultimately awarded the evening's "Fight of the Night" bonus.
The appearance was Silva's third of 2012, and while he took a little time off after the defeat, he returned quickly to the gym and prodded his management to earn him a quick booking.
"I had a good time with my family right after the fight, but unlikely my last fights, I resumed my work quickly," Silva said. "I asked for my manager to fight as soon as possible, so I can keep my last camp's rhythm. I was pleased to fight in such a good lineup in Brazil, and now I look forward to fight at UFC 156."
Featuring a featherweight title fight between current champ Jose Aldo and former lightweight title holder Frankie Edgar, UFC 156 takes place Feb. 2 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
UFC executives have yet to officially announce Silva's participation in the card, and his camp has not revealed if any potential opponents have been floated their way. UFC matchmaker Joe Silva typically likes to pair fighters with similar results in their previous bout, so the always-tough Rick Story, who also lost at UFC 153, could provide an interesting matchup. Of course, after clashing with Fitch, Silva could face just about anyone on the UFC roster, leaving athletes like Jay Hieron, Duane "Bang" Ludwig, Amir Sadollah and Paulo Thiago – all of whom came up short in recent appearances – as viable options.
Silva said he's willing to take on anyone the UFC brings to the table, but he hopes it will put him on a path that ultimately leads to redemption against Fitch.
"It would be an honor for me to fight again against such a high-leveled guy," Silva said. "For now, I expect to build a good winning streak and secure my spot at the top welterweight fighters."
