Mousasi: ‘Timing's Right' To Join The UFC

Strikeforce results: Gegard Mousasi thinks the ‘timing's right' for UFC transition; names potential opponents for debut

By Mike Bohn on Jan 13, 11:00p 50

Gegard Mousasi picked up a submission win over Mike Kyle at Strikeforce: "Marquardt vs. Saffiedine" and now believes the "timing's right" to take the next step in his career by moving to the UFC. Who would Mousasi like to fight in his Octagon debut? Two former champions and a top contender perk his interest.

Gegard Mousasi has spent 10 years and 38 professional fights competing in a variety of organization around the globe, but now "The Dreamcatcher" feels the "timing's right" to head to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). And he wants to take on opponents known for their exciting fights when he gets there.

Mousasi (33-3-2) may have punched his ticket into the UFC with an impressive first-round submission victory over Mike Kyle last night (Jan. 12, 2013) at Strikeforce: "Marquardt vs. Saffiedine," however, no official word regarding his contract status is available at this time.

The 27-year-old earned his 26th career first-round finish against Kyle, and with a wealth of experience under his belt, Mousasi believes the time has come to test himself against the very best competition in the world.

"...I think timing's right (to go to the UFC)," Mousasi said in a post-fight interview with Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting following his victory over Kyle. "I've done everything outside of UFC - Strikeforce, Japan, kickboxing, mauy-thai, I think the time is now to go, to fight those well known names."

Fans of Mousasi have fantasized about the Dutchman entering the Octagon for years now. If the move becomes a reality, Mousasi wants to be thrown into the deep end immediately and be paired against opponents at the very top of the 205-pound weight class.

Earlier this month, Mousasi expressed a desire to fight Alexander Gustafsson. When asked if that match up still tickles his fancy, the former Strikeforce lightweight champion said it would be a "good fight," but ultimately he just wants an opponent who will make a fan-pleasing fight and help him inch towards a chance to fight for Jon Jones' light heavyweight title.

"I'm not challenging (Alexander Gustafsson), but I think that's a good fight," said Mousasi. "I want to fight him because he's a good fighter; people think he's a good fighter. "Shogun," Machida - all of these guys people consider really good fighters, so I want to fight someone that people think is good and I think these match ups are more exciting than against some other opponents and they're top contenders so, I think fighting them would make sense for me the most so I can go earlier to the title shot."
