i used to box for a bit. i found mirror work was much better for me because i could see my punch technique, foot work, weight shifts, defense, blah, blah, blah....

basiclly mirror work is better than just shadow, but don't get me wrong, i did shadow, like when i would do my road work, and i would shadow with an object such as a tree to gauge my distance closing speed and lateral movement

mirror work for the proper punch, and accuracy is way better than a sloppy ass combo
