Round 1 - Referee Kim Winslow in the cage for this welterweight fight. Maia shoots in immediately after the glove touch. Fitch defends, but Maia gets the trip and is immediately on the back. Fitch stacnding, but Maia has a figure-four around the body. Right arm is on the chin, Fitch is pulling the left arm away. Maia relentless in seeking the choke. Fitch stalling from the front and working to peel the arms off. "Vai morrer" chants coming from the Brazilian contingent. Winslow watching. It's definitely a stall, but Maia is in great position. Maia finally lets go and returns to his feet but he scores another trip. Fitch to his feet and grabs the fence to prevent a takedown. He gets a warning, but he still falls to a knee. Maia again with a triangle around the body. One minute left. Maia looking again for the choke. Fitch is going to survive an incredibly difficult opening round. How much did carrying the weight bother him? gives the opening round to Maia, 10-9.

Round 2 - Maia quickly forward again. Fitch active on the feet to open, and Maia answers again. However, he doesn't look to box for long. Quick takedown for Maia. Fitch explodes to his feet, but Maia is right there with another takedown. This time Maia scrambles again to the back. Fitch kneeling, and Maia has his hooks in place. Fitch trying to peel his opponent off the fence. Maia won't have it, and he gets the choke in place. Fitch gets his chin tucked and pulls his opponent's arm off. Still, Maia is on the back and has a tight body triangle wrapped around the torso. Maia on his back with his opponent on his belly. He's trying to roll over, but Fitch has his feet posted on the fence and prevents the move. One minute left. Fitch again proving unchokeable, but Maia is in control of the action. Fitch grans the arm and tries to spin in for top position, but he's unable to do it. Fitch survives again, but gives it to Maia, 10-9.

Round 3 - Fitch misses an early high kick, and it lets Maia slip under and get an immediate bodylock. Fitch trying desperately to create some space and get away. Instead, Maia rolls deftly around to the back. He's in control yet again. Crowd boos, but Maia is putting on a clinic. He can't get the position he wants, and he backs away and resets. He doesn't mess around with standup, shooting in from distance. Fitch capitalizes and locks in a guillotine choke. It looks tight for a moment, but Maia survives it and pulls free, immediately returning to his feet and snaring yet another bodylock. Fitch creates some space with 80 seconds left. Maia takes a deep breath and simply shoots back in again. He scores yet another takedown. Fitch turns to his knees and tries to get back. Fitch shows his frustration as Maia moves again to the back. Fitch tries to use his legs to walk over and out of the hold, but he can't. Fight ends as Maia transitions to mount, and it's Maia bell to bell. gives it to Maia, 10-9, awarding him the fight 30-27. Demian Maia def. Jon Fitch via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
