UFC 167: GSP vs Johny Hendricks

Round 1 – Building is absolutely electric to start this fight. St-Pierre with an early low kick. He looks very quick. Hendricks rushes forward, but St-Pierre takes him down. He tries to grab the neck, but Hendricks back to his feet. Hendricks pushes St-Pierre to the cage. Knees traded inside. Clinch broken by the referee. Hendricks just misses an uppercut as St-Pierre shoots in. St-Pierre holds on to the right leg as Hendricks defends and tries to work in punches and elbows. Hendricks circles off the cage. He lifts St-Pierre and drops him on the floor at the halfway mark. St-Pierre crawls quickly back up and pulls away to restart. St-Pierre ducks down and catches a knee, but he shakes it off. St-Pierre kicks the leg and the body. St-Pierre with a high kick. His right eye already showing a little damage with a small cut. They work again in the clinch, but nothing there. Hendricks looks very comfortable in the pocket. St-Pierre busier in the final seconds, but MMAjunkie gives Hendricks a close round, 10-9.

Round 2 – St-Pierre kicking to start the second. Superman punch, but Hendricks right there to return fire. St-Pierre looks a little fired up. Hendricks looks very comfortable. They meet in the center, and Hendricks scores. St-Pierre is getting tagged to start. They work in the clinch, but Hendricks lost his mouthpiece, and referee Mario Yamasaki tops the fight to put it back in. Hendricks on fire on the restart. He’s trying to make this a brawl. St-Pierre lands a lead left. That little break may have helped him. Jab scores. Hendricks happy to press. Kicks traded. Both fighters already showing some wear of a quick early pace. Hendricks’ volume slowing, but he’s still dangerous with the left. St-Pierre with a high kick that’s blocked. He’s settling into a rhythm. Counter right for St-Pierre. Clinch in the final seconds. Great back-and-forth stuff through two. MMAjunkie leans toward Hendricks again, but the tide could be turning.

Round 3 – St-Pierre with an early low kick. A second lands. He nearly ducks into a knee. Hendricks goes to the body. St-Pierre really utilizing his kicks, and Hendricks happy to walk through them and throw punches. Hendricks finding some success with the lead right. He pops out two jabs. St-Pierre moving well and circling away from the power hand. St-Pierre grabbing the right arm. Tense moments as we reach the halfway mark. Hendricks reaching, and St-Pierre evades ad looks up at the clock. St-Pierre the busier fighter, and he lands a nice right hand. Shots traded in the pocket. St-Pierre kicks the leg and blocks the counter. Hendricks has really slowed, but he does punch the body. One minute left. Hendricks drops down for a takedown. It takes some time, but he does get the position. St-Pierre crawls up before he takes any damage. Another close round, but MMAjunkie leans toward St-Pierre, 10-9.

Round 4 – Championship rounds underway Kick to the body for St-Pierre. He chops the lead leg. Hendricks in the center, and he misses on a few early power shots. St-Pierre kicks low, and Hendricks signals it’s to the cup, but we fight on. St-Pierre continues to work the lead leg, and he scores with a stiff jab. Hendricks rushes in, and as he throws power shots inside, he pushes an off-balance St-Pierre to the floor. Hendricks in his opponent’s guard, woking punches to the body. He postures up with short elbows. St-Pierre gets his legs inside, and Hendricks willingly backs away. Odd choice, but he must trust his power. St-Pierre is cut from the blows on the floor. He kicks the body as Hendricks continues to box. St-Pierre works the body and pushes in against the cage. Hendricks immediately circles off and presses in from the outside. He wants to elevate his opponent, but St-Pierre grabs the body and eventually gains control of the position. Hendricks quickly reverses as blood continues to run down St-Pierre’s face. Knees from Hendricks to close, and he gets the round on the MMAjunkie card, 10-9.

Round 5 – The MMAjunkie card shows Hendricks up 3-1 going into the fifth, but neither can feel certain. St-Pierre has a sense of urgency as he strikes. He drives in for a takedown, holding the right leg and pulling Hendricks off the fence. St-Pierre can’t get the takedown no matter how hard he tries. Hendricks stays upright, and he turns and presses St-Pierre into the cage. Short knees inside, but St-Pierre slips under and gets away. St-Pierre now looking to strike. He lands a right hand and gets an immediate takedown. Hendricks scrambles quickly to a kneeling position. St-Pierre controls from the front, but Hendricks gets to his feet and spins off the fence. Halfway mark of the final frame. Hendricks with short knees inside. St-Pierre turns off the cage, but they’e broken apart and start again in the center. Front kick from St-Pierre. He’s bloodied but looking to throw. Crowd firmly behind the champ, but his time on top may be nearing and end. St-Pierre punches his way into a takedown, but Hendricks defends against the fence. St-Pierre does get a single-leg takedown, but Hendricks pops right back up. Time winding down. Hendricks pressing against the cage. Round ends there. MMAjunkie gives the final round to St-Pierre, 10-9, but awards the fight to Hendricks, 48-47. Those early rounds were very, very close. Hendricks celebrates at the bell, as St-Pierre raises his arms with a little less enthusiasm.

Result: Georges St-Pierre def. Johny Hendricks via split decision (47-48, 48-47, 48-47) – to retain UFC welterweight title
