The fight was originally supposed to be a fixed match but Ali's management feared that Inoki would turn it into a shoot match (prowrestling match turned into legit brawl). So instead they all got together and negotiated a legitimate rule set. Then right before the fight happened the rules got changed resulting in the fight that happened. Inoki was restricted from grappling Ali or pulling any wrestling throws and also couldn't kick unless he had one knee on the mat. The match was ruled a draw but by today's standards I think Inoki would've been called the winner.
