The card for UFC Rio 4 event held on August 3 begins to take shape and status of a super event. In the main we have the superfight between Brazilian Jose Aldo to defend his belt for the 4th time in the UFC against Anthony "Showtime" Pettis, besides the main event one more fight this "almost" right for the event. The site NewsMMA found that Brazilian Demian Maia and American, Josh Kosheck should come into collision course in August, scheduled for UFC 163, in this wonderful city.
The brazilian Demian Maia (18-4) comes in clear rise in the category since their arrival, were 3 win against Hyun Kim, Story and Fitch. The fight against the Brazilian Kosheck certainly put very close to a title shot if they win.
Already Kosheck (17-7) has a bad phase in the last 5 fights were 3 losses. The fighter this with 2 consecutive losses (Hendricks and Lawler) and a possible loss to Demian August put your job at stake within the company.
While the streaks may not line up, Koscheck is a tough go for everyone and another test for Maia (if they are trying to build him up for a title shot)
Kos is Fitch with better striking, so it's not necessarily grappler vs grappler, Kos is still ranked #10, the only other top 10 available is Condit (2) Diaz (6) and Kampmann (7)
Shields vs Woodley - June 15
Rory (3) vs Ellenberger (4) - July 27
Tarec (8) vs Lawler (9) - July 27
Gsp vs Hendricks (1) - Sept 21??
Diaz could fight Kampmann, so could Condit, Maia wants to stay busy, glad Kos is back, and who knows if Kampann is still injured, Diaz is technically retired.
Not crazy about this fight. Maia should fight someone comming off a win, not two straight losses. Kos is a tough opponent, but this is a step backwards.
People are writing Kos off a little too quickly. I think he is a better then Fitch in several areas (striking, TDD, TD's). I wouldnt be surprised to see him beat Maia.
This is actually tougher for Maia then many realize. Koscheck has pretty damn good takedown defense, noticeably better then Fitch imo although Fitch is a better grappler when on the ground.
Striking wise they are probably around equal so I am not really sure who to go with. I am hoping Maia will win because if Koscheck does it would be yet another contender derailed but I don't think he will run through Koscheck like some others here do.
Why are people writing Koscheck off? He was Ko'd by Lawler who has a lot of power?
Koscheck gives Maia troubles, he has good defense and He can keep it standing or keep Maia on the cage and beat him up. I'm pretty excited I think Koscheck will will this fight
Good fight, I would love to see Maia submit Koscheck. It's sad but Koscheck is definitely on the downswing of his career and is fading with age. This fight could end up standing though and on the feet they're both close.
Kos is a terrible matchup for Maia on paper. If Maia can actually take Kos down though that speaks well to his prospects against GSP who had a lot of trouble getting the takedown against Kos in the second fight.
Even GSP had problems taking Kos down in their second fight. He landed only like 3 takedowns and Kos popped right back up every time, so I doubt that Maia is getting him down. Maia has no standup, Kos at least has a right hand and KO power. Maia is getting KTFO here.
What has Kos actually done recently? Who has he beat? A close decision loss to Hendricks is his most redeeming fight in years. A split over Pierce? KO of a Hughes that had his soul stolen by Penn and had been declining for years anyways? Or a decision over Daley?
Kos is on the decline and Maia is looking amazing at 170. Kos didn't even look like he wanted to fight against Lawler.
I like it. Kos is still a big enough name. It wasn't long ago that he had his title shot. Maia is now looking like the big name at WW, and this fight will show is Maia is the real deal, and if Kos has anything left. Worst case scenario, Maia gets a popular W on his rec and Kos gets cut (algthough, also best case scenario )
Demian Maia vs. Josh Koscheck targeted for UFC 163 in August
A welterweight fight is about to be added to UFC 163.
Demian Maia vs. Josh Koschech is slated to take place on the Aug. 3 card, MMAFighting.com confirmed with sources close to the fight after Brazilian Web site News MMA first reported it earlier this week. The UFC has yet to officially announced the 170-pound fight.
Maia (18-4) is coming off a dominant unanimous decision win over Jon Fitch at UFC 156 in February. That win improved his record as a welterweight to 3-0.
Koscheck (17-7) has lost his last two fights in a row. He most recently lost via first-round TKO to Robbie Lawler at UFC 157 in February,
UFC 163 will be headlined by Jose Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis for the UFC featherweight title. The event will take place in Brazil, and while some outlets have reported it will be held in Rio de Janeiro, that has yet to be made official by the organization, as well.
