Spong/Corbett 2 booked for Glory 11
Just three days before his second professional MMA fight, kickboxer Tyrone Spong has been booked to headline GLORY 11 this fall.
Spong, who is 72-6-1 as a kickboxer with 45 knockouts, will headline the card against Nathan Corbett, who is 57-3-1, promotion officials on Wednesday announced. The fight is a rematch from a 2009 bout that ended in a no-contest.
GLORY 11 will take place Oct. 12 at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., northwest of Chicago. The card will air live on Spike TV.
Spong (1-0 MMA) on Saturday headlines World Series of Fighting 4 against Angel DeAnda (11-2) at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif. The main card airs on NBC Sports Network (10:30 p.m. ET) following prelims that stream live on MMAjunkie.com (8 p.m. ET).
In November, Spong, who trains with the Blackzilians in South Florida, made his professional MMA debut by knocking Travis Bartlett in the first round at WSOF 1. In June, he won an eight-man, single-night GLORY tournament in New York.
Earlier this year, Spike TV announced it was adding GLORY's kickboxing events to its sports programming. The cable network in 2005 began broadcasting MMA with "The Ultimate Fighter" and live UFC events. And in January, the channel began its deal with Bellator MMA.
GLORY 11 also features the start of a heavyweight tournament and a co-main event between Joe Valtellini and Karim Ghajji.
This is a long time coming and awesome as hell. After the way their first fight ended, this had to happen.
