Demian Maia vs Jake Shields - Round 1 - Maia with an early takedown and he has Shields up against the cage. Shields does eventually work his way to the top himself. Shields with some elbows and punches from the top. Hard round to write about but compelling in its way. 10-9 Maia.

Round 2 - Maia looking for the takedown, Shields defends well early and now he counters and gets his own takedown. Shields owns the top for the whole round, but not much happens. 10-9 Shields.

Round 3 - Maia wanting to strike, Shields throws a jab and an inside leg kick. Maia tries for a takedown, Shields defends, spins and was on top but they're back to standing. Good punches by Maia now and he gets the back standing and gets the takedown. Maia has the back. Shields rolls and is on top now. Great reversal. Now Shields is just slowly, safely working on top. Good elbow from Shields. 10-9 Shields.

Round 4 - They're struggling for position against the cage. They're restarted as it had clearly hit the point of being a stalemate. Shields shoots for a single leg, Maia defends well and they're back to standing. Leg kick by Maia and Shields shoots for a takedown again but has to give up and Maia is on top with two minutes left. Shields is lookin pretty tired. 10-9 Maia.

Round 5 - Maia working underhooks after a few minutes of nothing really happening. Nothing comes of it. Shields with a few leg kicks and body kicks and even a head kick. Shields witha left hand. Maia with a left hand. Bad round. I'd go 10-9 Maia to give him the 48-47 win.

Official scorecards: 48-47 Shields, 48-47 Maia, 48-47 Shields. Jake Shields wins by split decision.
