I think you're asking about the Matt Hughes armbar.
It was really a sloppy armbar, he had no leverage and Royce is very flexible and highly tolerant to pain after like 40 years of practicing BJJ. Hughes had no leverage and wasn't in a position to do any damage to Royce that would have stopped the fight.
If you look at the concentration on Royce's face while he's in the armbar, he's completely comcentrated on finding a way out of the armbar, the pain isn't even phasing him. Royce knew that Matt wasn't going to be able to tap him out and so did the entire Gracie family.
