I suggest taking a grappling style, either BJJ or Judo, and a striking style, boxing is probably best. This will give you a good idea of where you're skills are and what you will need to improve in order to be a better fighter.

Most MMA fighters aren't masters of anything, except for some of the BJJ guys. Become well versed in different styles and focus on becoming a mixed martial artist.
It will probably be about 3-4 years before you're ready to start really fighting

It takes about a year of amateur fighting before you'll have the experience needed to quit the day job. If you're really a prodigy then maybe 6 months of amateur fighting. That really depends on you.
