Talent and training are two completely different things. A guy could have superior raw talent, but if he doesn't train correctly, he still gets beat. BJ Penn is a good example of this.

Shoney talks about this himself in the first episode. He says that in his training camp he is top dog and therefore no one is there to push him. Now being surrounded by these others fighters has obviously pushed Shoney more (till he pukes), but great coaches could do even more for him and the others.

There is a reason why it has become more common for fighters to have one main camp, but do a lot of training at other camps. It's to round out their game, to challenge themselves more, to learn different techniques. This is the reason the Miletich camp has been so successful. Other camps/fighters are starting to catch on to this strategy.

What you mention about proving themselves to Dana. I don't think what I suggest takes anything away from that. It's still up to the individual fighter to listen to the advice given, to push himself in training, and to have the heart to compete. My suggestions just give them the tools they need to succeed.
