my favorite thing about the thai boxing is that it includes knees and elbows, which will be handy in MMA.

But, I personally favor boxing. In MMA, it's easier to survive with no kicks than with no hands.

Of course, having both are best.

But since you said that you're in it for the recreation, I'd say that it will depend on your personal preferences more than anything else.

Some people find full contact (boxing, kickboxing, MT, Sanda, etc) fun. Others hate getting rattled by hard shots on a regular basis. Some people find point fighting (karate, TKD) to be awesome. Some other people like to give and recieve more brain damage, so point fighting isn't really for them. In the end, you should study up on what each style (thats available in your area) will give you, and try out as much as you can. Then stick with what you liked best.
