No one sells themselves on an open ended bargain except for gamblers, alcoholics, and retarded politicians. Most people are rational and will weigh the benefits vs the drawbacks.
If you are told you made TUF and have the impression you will be there for the 16 weeks it can make sense to sell your car and quit your job.
If you know you might only be there for a day you might not agree, and certainly would weigh everything more carefully, or even make alternate arrangements. Like take 3 days off from work and keep the car. Make a Power of Attorney for someone to sell your car if you make it, and do whatever with the job.
In your example you are saying soemone should sign for a mortgage without knowing the interest rate and not be sruprised if it is 20% instead of the market rate, and that it would serve them right. I am saying they probably wouldn't sign in the first place and that it would be rational to make different decisions for different situations.
