Its been somtime now since Hughes was destroyed by Alvez and i know he sustained an injury, however is this fight likey to ever happen now? I havent seen any news regards this matchup for somewhile and Serras camp has also been quiet of late.
Has the time now passed regards the fights appeal?
Do you really care if it happens?
The "hatred" hype has long since died and i personally couldnt care less if these two fight each other again, lets face it there is gonna be heck of a wait even if Hughes gets fully fit etc as there a quite a few events and fan wanted draws before these two could possibly headline, i cant see Hughes being willing to step this fight down to a "fight night" event it will have to be a Main Eventer.
So what do you guys say?
But does anyone really care about this fight anymore really?
GSP was KO'd simple as that, it was an aimed strike with intent so get over the luck factor, granted Serra on paper should not have won that fight but think on this -
Hughes beats GSP then gets owned on the rematch yet still gets a third fight, Serra owns GSP first fight gets destroyed in the rematch but no 3rd fight will ever happen.
Anyway i digress, i dont really want to see this fight now as both fighters have been inactive and where could this fight be shown? it certainly doesnt deserve to be a headliner let alone a "co Top event"
Hughes, Serra and the UFC have missed the boat on this fight as far as im concerned.
Well, Hughes lately has made me... sad. He looks slower than he used to, and not as active and bad ass as he used to. He doesn't seem he's in the fight sometimes. Remember the guy who could just lift up people and slam them? Who'd piss off everybody on this forum with his cocky and arrogant comments? Where did that farmer boy go? Did GSP take him away from us with his "great ass"?
Hughes is lackluster nowdays, Serra (exept for when he shocked the world) is not the most exiting fighter himself, TBH.
It's a grey, dull matchup in my eyes, and probably in many fan's eyes.
I'd much rather see BJ/Hughes close out their trilogy as opposed to a reality T.V. series feud that, quite frankly, isn't relevant at all.
The fight is far more tainted now than it was a year ago because of Hughes' recent string of losses and GSP's destruction of Serra, but it just doesn't seem justifiable these days.
I've heard January from a few different sources. I wouldn't expect it to be a main event. Gotta wait for all the major fights to finish first Couture/Lesnar & GSP/Penn.
To be honest, I really want to see this fight still. It's so obvious that these guys hate each other. Should be very entertaining.
Either one of them could win. Serra would have the standup advantage and I give the ground advantage to Hughes based solely on his experience and wins over tough opponents. He would also has a height advantage. Hughes does well against short stocky wrestler types. IMO, he's failing now because he can't hang with taller, more well-rounded fighters (GSP, Alves etc.)
There is no way this matchup would be broadcast on a Fight Night. This is UFC 93-94 material. Loyal Hughes fans will still pay to see him fight.
To be honest if Hughes beats Serra (like I think he will), I believe that will bring back the fire and Matt will want to take out some more "up and comers" before he retires. To much pride in that guy. That's his downfall lately.
to echo others; it never really appealed to me to begin with. At the time it was Serra v GSP II that most people were more interested in seeing -- myself included -- and we've seen that. The way GSP dominated Serra on the ground tells me that Hughes is probably too strong for Serra as well and the fight would have gone much the same way.
So i guess it's lost some appeal in that that question is less of a mystery... but can you have negative appeal? I don't know.
I honestly see Serra winning this, no one can honestly think that Hughes is a force anymore, he just dosent seem interested in it anymore.
Serra tko R3
And on topic, yes I think this fight has appeal still, bad blood sells, but more importantly ALOT of people hate at least one of these guys, so by that logic the chance to see both of them get beat up at the same time is very appealing
I would like to see Serra get slammed Carlos Newton style  Hughes is washed up but he could hold down Serra for a ground and pound victory. The hype is way gone for this fight. If this fight happens I see it being the first fight of the night not no co-main event for sure.
Some good points, i personally can see the UFC "engineering" another dispute between the two, perhaps when Sell fights Burkman they can get Serra to say a few words to start hyping the "grudge" again
just went on UFC.com and Matt Hughes is on a Q+A and is asked about the Serra fight he replied that its looking to be held around Jan/Feb 09 sooooooooooooo watch out for the orchestrated buildup etc from the UFC and the WWE style rants from the respective camps
What streak? Serra took belt off GSP, then lost it back to him on next fight. 1 fight "losing streak" against a guy who is pretty much unbeatable by entire division right now isn't bad at all, specially as he is GSP's only loss in last 4 years or so.
Problem is Serra hasn't fought since losing his belt, he could really make a case for Serra vs. GSP III if he would actually clock couple wins now, something which he should have started to do already instead of waiting for Hughes to recover. Someone like Koscheck (I doubt Serra can beat him, but still) after he beats Hughes. Because both Serra and Koscheck are guys with a recent'ish loss against GSP, and because both are ranked top 8 in all well known rankings (like it or not) its a fight that would make a sense in a way too.
This is assuming Serra actually wants to stay in WW and go for 3rd fight against GSP instead of taking a time off again or dropping back to LW like many of us are wishing.
I'd say indeed it's lost its appeal: when both guys have been at the top of their game it would be fun to watch. Having seen both lose recently, I'm not so certain that it would make a nice main event. Perhaps, if it was one of the co-main events...
