AfflictionWorld renowned MMA clothing company, Affliction, reached into their pockets and pulled together an organization of top fighters, marketed & publicized by Affliction Entertainment VP, Tom Atencio. This organization, unlike their competition, is open to cross-promotion.
"As far as the numbers went, the big number everyone is looking for is the Affliction PPV number. Based on independent estimates we've heard, the number has been estimated at between 50,000 and 85,000 buys. Atencio claimed the number as being higher, saying it topped 100,000, although at press time, any numbers could only be considered rough estimates. Atencio told us that since UFC doesn't release numbers, he's not going to either (I know, after saying it was more than 100,000). Keep in mind that Pride claimed 150,000 buys for its first U.S. PPV in 2006, and the real number ended up being 40,000 (we know that because Nevada taxes on PPV revenue so you can get a real number; California does not so getting real numbers will be more difficult)."
I agree, I don't see how this proves that the PPV buys are lower than 100,000. I'm not saying that they exceeded 100k. But nothing in that statement contains any facts or figures about the affliction PPV buys, just some comparison to events from 2 years ago. If pride did 40k buys in 2006 why couldn't the affliction show do 100k? Look at the explosion in popularity of MMA in the last few years and with the fight having a star studded card that brought in big names from a variety of organizations, It seems to me that they had the ingrediants to do the job they set out to do. I think that it did better than anyone wants to give it credit for.

haha... funny that they wont say now and claim it's because the UFC does not. What happened to being differant than the UFC? ah well, i'm not hating. just would have been nice to know how many buys they did. my money would be around 80k.
Meltzer's info and figures are always pretty reliable. If he says the early estimates are 50,000-85,000 you can pretty much take it to the bank that its acurate.

If this is true, I don't think it's very surprising. One would only have to look on this forum's poll about how many people would order the Affliction PPV to see it wasn't as many people as first thought. The only people that knew who a lot of the Afflcition fighters were was really dedicated MMA fans and old school UFC/Pride fans fans.
