Feb 27, 2012 - Blagoi Ivanov, an undefeated Bellator heavyweight, is reportedly clinging to life at Pirogov Hospital in Sofia, Bulgaria after being stabbed in the heart in a Sunday morning barroom brawl.
According to Bulgaria's Sofia News Agency, the fighter remains in critical condition on artificial life support.
Ivanov and two friends were allegedly attacked by eight individuals armed with bats and knives immediately after arriving to a bar on Graf Ignatiev Street. Police arrived at 5:10 a.m. to discover the assailants missing and a deep stab wound under Ivanov's armpit that was later found to have pierced his heart.
The three victims were rushed to Pirogov Hospital, where surgeons reportedly carried out a life-saving operation on Ivanov. Despite the procedure, doctors maintain that the 25-year-old's life is still "under a real threat."
Ivanov's two friends were treated for light wounds and bruises and have since been released from the hospital.
Police are currently investigating the attack. According to reports, the same bar was also the scene of a recent shooting.
Ivanov (6-0, 1 NC) is perhaps best known for being the man to dethrone Fedor Emelianenko in the 2008 Combat Sambo World Championships finals. After rolling to a 3-0 record to kick off his professional mixed martial arts career, "Baga" inked a deal with Bellator Fighting Championships, where he promptly finished William Penn and Zak Jensen to advance to the semi-finals of Season 5's heavyweight tournament.
However, Ivanov would ultimately withdraw from a Bellator 56 bout against Thiago Santos due to an injury sustained in training. He then fought against former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez, earning a third-round TKO victory last December.

That's awful. Only 25 years old, very promising career ahead of him and attacked by 8 men. I wonder what caused the attack though.
A stab wound in the armpit..

Terrible news, my thoughts are with his family. He's one of the better non UFC/Strikeforce heavyweights.

It has been suggested that Ivanov has been involved in organized crime.
Maybe it was a trap and his two friends who escaped without any damaged ratted on him and took him to the bar.
Bulgaria is know for its mafia.

That is certainly an unstable country and it is possible that was the result. However, it doesn't mean anything until proof is shown. Also this doesn't mean the end of his career.

In all honesty a gun should be a last resort like if someone else is packing. Personally I think someone who uses a gun in cold blood is a coward. If someone is using a knife or something else its a completely different story.

I know how to fight, Im not gonna say I can kick anyones ass or anything like that, but if I get attacked by more than one guy, Im bustin a cap. Just sayin. And im always packin. Doesnt mean your a coward, just means your respect your own life and dont want to see it ended by some fool. This is a cruel world, thoughts are with his family and him as well.

Update on his condition and case:
Quote:
Blagoi Ivanov, the Bulgarian MMA fighter who was recently stabbed in a brawl in downtown Sofia, has regained consciousness.
Ivanov is now in a stable condition and is under a milder treatment regimen, doctors have told the BGNES news agency.
The fighter's main problem is with one of his lungs and not with his heart, according to the experts that treat him.
A week ago, Ivanov and two of his friends had just occupied their places in a bar on Graf Ignatiev Str., when a group of 8 persons armed with bats and knives, including the suspect, allegedly came in and attacked them.
At 5.10 am police came in to find the attackers escaped and Ivanov with a deep stab wound under his armpit.
On his record, Blagoi Ivanov aka Bagata has the gold medal in the 2008 World Sambo Championships and the bronze in the 2006 world contest.
In March 2011, he signed a contract with Bellator Fighting Championship to take part in the mixed martial arts heavyweight division.
In Bellator MMA fights, Blagoi Ivanov has never lost a match, having won 6 of his 7 games this far, and tied one.

The main suspect in the stabbing of Bulgarian MMA fighter, Blagoi Ivanov AKA Bagata, - 23-year-old D.S. known as Dampela, is going to be kept under permanent detention.
The Thursday rule of the Sofia Court of Appeals upheld the one of the lowest instance.
Dampela is charged with attempted murder. He has a criminal record for extortion, drug possession and distribution, and fake car registration documents.
On Sunday, February 7, Ivanov and two of his friends had just occupied their places in a bar on Graf Ignatiev Str., in downtown Sofia, when a group of 8 persons armed with bats and knives allegedly came in and attacked them.
At 5.10 am police came in to find the attackers escaped and Ivanov with a deep stab wound under his armpit.
Ivanov's two companions have suffered only light wounds and bruises and have been discharged by the hospital.
Many of the witnesses of the brawl were inebriated at the time, which has made the work of police harder.
Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, declared this is a purely criminal case triggered by drunken rage.
On Thursday, Dampela's defense lawyer Radost Karaivanova commented before journalists that the investigation is collecting evidence only in support of the prosecution's case and skips questioning certain witnesses on purpose.
According to Karaivanova, this has been a drunken fight initiated by Bagata, who had been pestering her client and slapped him on the face in the presence of a number of people.
Friends and relatives of the champion, however, insist he had been injured while attempting to break a fight.
Karaivanova further rejected information that Dampela had bragged in public about stabbing the celebrity competitor as the prosecutor claims, and says he only learned about Bagata's injuries from the internet. Upon realizing it, he went on his own to the police to explain what happened.
It was reported meanwhile that Bagata has been upgraded from critical to stable condition and has regained consciousness in the Sofia emergency Pirogov hospital, but his life is still in danger.
Blagoi Ivanov aka Bagata won the gold medal in the 2008 World Sambo Championships and the bronze in the 2006 world contest. He is known in Bulgaria for organizing and participating in so-called "free fights," in which the audience bet on the outcome.

Well this was clearly a case of people getting upset and stuff like that. It just sounds like a random act or something like that. Regardless I wonder how his career will be affected.
