Jessica Aguilar vs. Megumi Fujii confirmed for Bellator 69
A meeting between top-ranked fighters Megumi Fujii (25-1 MMA, 3-1 BFC) and Jessica Aguilar (13-4 MMA, 3-1 BFC) is now official.
Bellator officials today confirmed the 115-pound women's bout for the MTV2-televised main card of Bellator 59, which takes place May 18 at L'Auberge du Lac Casino Resort in Lake Charles, La. Prelims stream on Spike.com.
The event also features the finals of Bellator's season-six lightweight tournament and a heavyweight tournament qualifier pitting vet Ron Sparks (8-1 MMA, 3-1 BFC) against Kevin Asplund (15-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC).
Fujii and Aguilar both suffered close decision defeats to Zoila Gurgel in Bellator's first and only women's tournament, which also took place at 115 pounds. Both also are expected to compete in a 125-pound tourney that's slotted for either season seven later this year or season eight next year.
Fujii suffered a heavily panned split-decision defeat to Gurgel in the 2010 tourney's finale. Since then, the top-ranked fighter has won three consecutive fights in her native Japan. The Gurgel defeat remains the only one of her eight-year career, which has included 17 submission wins in 25 career victories.
Aguilar also is undefeated (4-0) since her loss to Gurgel, which came in the semifinals of the tourney. Recently, she's picked up Bellator victories over Carla Esparza and Lisa Ellis-Ward. Aguilar is 8-1 over her past nine fights.
After an impressive run as an up-and-coming heavyweight, Sparks is on the rebound after a knockout loss to Eric Prindle, who at Bellator 62 won the season-five tournament when fellow finalist Thiago Santos was unable to make weight. He's dispatched six of his opponents in the first round with his fists.
Asplund, meanwhile, is still on a roll. The heavyweight hasn't been defeated since his professional debut in September 2002, winning 15 consecutive fights.
