WMMA Roundup: April 2013
WMMA Roundup: April 2013
WMMA has been on the scene ever since the beginning of the sport itself, it dates back that far. We just never knew it, or never paid that much attention to it. It was always there, but the Randy Coutures’, the Chuck Liddells’, got the headlines, the major sponsorships, the TV/Film cameos, they got it all. The ladies? Fought on the regional scene, the undercards.
The girls shall be denied no longer. Their time has come and several MMA promotions have upcoming WMMA fights that are destined to catch the eye of the casual fan, and quench the thirst of the avid WMMA follower.
April 2013…… WMMA hit the MMA scene with a bang!
So here’s the breakdown.
April 4th we head to Revel, Atlantic City, New Jersey for Bellator 95
Jessica ‘Evil Eye’ vs ‘The Perefect Storm’ Munah Holland.
Jessica is coming off of a stunning Submission victory over Bellator Champ Ziola Frausto Gurgel, it took less than a minute for Eye to stun the reigning champ and lock in a standing arm triangle. Putting the submission specialist out cold at the 58-second mark. Jessica Eye is looking to improve on her 9-1 record, which also includes a 3-0 record in Bellator.
Munah Holland is rebounding off of a loss against the always dangerous Michelle Ould, and no better opportunity could have presented itself. Coming into the fight with a rather modest 5-2 record, Holland has the better profile wins overall, with a victory over the likes of Kim Couture, and KO wins over Marianna Kheyfets, and Carina Damm.
Prediction: Jessica Eye via Decision.
April 5th we head to Ameristar Casino Hotel, Kansas City, Missouri for Invicta FC 5
This card is so stacked so I will bold my predictions for the main card:
-Jessica Penne vs Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson [Atomweight Championship]
- Vanessa Porto vs Barb “Little Warrior” Honchak [Flyweight Championship]
- Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos vs Fiona Muxlow
- Sarah Kaufman vs Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith
- Zoila “The Warrior Princess” Gurgel vs Jennifer Maia
- Kaitlin Young vs Lauren Taylor
- Julia “The Jewel” Budd vs TBD
- Bec “Rowdy” Hyatt vs Jasminka Cive
The biggest talking point of the card is the Invicta debut of Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, a deadly and controversial figure in MMA, Cyborg is in my opinion, a big favourite to be wearing Gold this year (providing all PED tests come back clean for her). Her original opponent Ediane “India” Gomes pulled out with an injury. And that is a shame as she posed an interesting matchup for the returning Santos. Fiona Muxlow is a fine fighter, but her last fight against Coenen was a very one-sided affair and this upcoming scrap has the odds stacked heavily against her. And rightly so.
Muxlow is a fine grappler, with 3 of her 6 victories coming by submission.
This will not be her night in a standup war, and on the ground you’d have to think Cyborgs’ brute strength and devastating top-game will overwhelm Muxlow early on.
This is one of Invicta FC’s finest cards to date, and potentially paves the way for Coenen/Santos II.
WMMA Elite Penne, Waterson, Honchak, Kaufmann and Gurgel also feature on the card.
April 13th we have the TUF17 Finale.
This card not only bookends an intriguing and entertaining TUF17 by crowning it’s winner, but it also paves the way for the following Ultimate Fighter.
For the first time ever, a season of the Ultimate Fighter will be coached by two females. On one side we have the reigning champion Ms. Ronda Rousey, and on the other we have one of the two WMMA combatants on the TUF17 Finale Card.
Miesha ‘Cupcake’ Tate will take on Cat ‘Alpha’ Zingano on the events Main Card.
Zingano enters the fight with a perfect 7-0 record, coming off of a 2nd round submission win over Raquel Pennington at Invicta 3. Zingano has 3 KO/TKO wins to add to her 3 Submissions wins. So she is no slouch on her feet, to go with that BJJ Black Belt of hers.
Tate is a stern test for Zingano. Tate has fought on the big stage that was Strikeforce, she has faced the best WMMA had to offer her for opposition. Depositing of the likes of Elaina Maxwell, Zoila Frausto Gurgel, Hitomi Akano, Julie Kedzie and her come-from-behind Title victory over Marloes Coenen. Tate has already fallen into the trap of the Rousey 1st round armbar and will be looking for redemption in a big way, and what better stage than on an Ultimate Fighter finale.
Prediction: Tate via Decision, Tate has the submission victories to her name, but will not have the luck of putting Zingano away, Cat will put up a hell of a fight for Tate, but a fight that ‘Cupcake’ could take.
I had a rollercoaster of emotions when the announcement was first made. I was first so happy and elated that WMMA got not only the platform to fully perform to the height of their abilities, but they’d finally get the TUF treatment and gain noteworthy exposure as a result.
Then it dawned on me, they’d be sharing the house with Men?.....why? This season could have been equally entertaining if the Men and Women were housed separately. Do they NEED to be in the same house together? Is it essential they share accommodation in a house that is season, after season, victim to drunken vandalism and shenanigans? It screamed of the kind of setup that WMMA should NOT be subjected to….car-crash TV!
I’ve joked on Twitter about how this season may well have been sponsored by Durex and Clear-Blue Pregnancy Kits. But I hope that coaches Rousey and Tate/Zingano, Dana White, and FOX keep a close eye on how the Women are presented on the show, how the Men behave and view and treat the Women, and keep the action in the cage. As I have said before, if anything, this season will easily weed out the ‘Focussed’ and ‘Dedicated’ from the ‘Easily Distracted’.
Sensationalist post-production could lead to WMMA being viewed as a joke if they are subjected to oversexed editing and portrayal.
We round off April with a trip to Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey, for UFC 159.
Sara McMann takes on heavy hitting Sheila Gaff.
Gaff comes into the fight with 6 KO/TKO victories and also 4 Submission victories. 1st round maulings of Jennifer Maia, Aisling Daly and Hanna Sillen put Gaff firmly on the WMMA map. Controversy over faking glove taps to achieve quick KO’s and underground rumblings of a PED issue didn’t put Zuffa off getting Sheilas’ ink on a UFC contract.
McMann comes into the fight with tested grappling credential, 3 decisions wins accompany her 3 submission wins. Her opposition reads like a who’s who of WMMA talent. Tonya Evinger, Raquel Pa'aluhi, Hitomi Akano and Shayna Baszler her last 4 victories.
Brute force and KO Power vs smothering and nullifying MMA grappling.
Predicion: McMann: 2nd round submission.
April gives us so much WMMA action, I hope this coming month sees WMMA catch the hearts of the casual and dedicated MMA fan alike, and hope that all this great exposure and action will not be sullied with a badly-treated TUF18.
WMMA has so much to give; if you want to catch it at its peak…April is the month.
