Dan Henderson going to Strikeforce

Posted 01-02-2010 at 06:24 PM by HitOrGetHit
With Strikeforce getting ahold of Dan "Hendo" Henderson, they have bumped up their talent level. I believe that this is more than just a good signing. This move could do good or bad for both the UFC and Strikeforce.

If Dan Henderson were to lose his first fight or not amount to much in Strikeforce, it will hurt the UFC's reputation. Strikeforce would have just shut down one of the UFC's top contenders. On the other hand, if Henderson cleans out Strikeforce then it could be detrimental to the growth of Strikeforce. An ex-UFC fighter who wasn't even a champion beat everyone that Strikeforce put in with him. It is a risky move for both parties, but in my opinion, it is more risky for Strikeforce.

If Henderson loses in Strikeforce, the UFC can spin it and say that he was washed up and that the Strikeforce fighters would never beat an actual UFC champion. If Henderson is to do great things in Strikeforce, then Strikeforce can't really explain how a non UFC champion beat all of their fighters.

All in all, if Henderson is to stay in Strikeforce until he is finished with fighting, then this is a great move for Strikeforce either way. If Henderson beats his opponents in Strikeforce and then returns to the UFC, it will most definitely put a dent in Strikeforce's reputation.

Another problem with Henderson going to Strikeforce is that Strikeforce will more than likely have Henderson headlining fight cards. To the hardcore fan this could be a great thing. The problem is that most casual fans are naturally more attracted to the UFC, so they will not be as interested in Henderson headlining an event as they would be in a UFC headliner. Dan Henderson is not as big of a draw as Strikeforce more than likely thinks.

I think that this is very risky for Strikeforce. This could either be a huge success, or a huge failure. Either way I will be sitting back and watching to find out.
