A Farewell to World Extreme Cagefighting
As many fans of MMA know, as of January 2011, the WEC will become part of the MMA superpower that is the UFC. The last WEC card is expected to take place on December 16 of this year.
Many fans are very excited about this transition but I have to say, it will be sad watching the WEC go. An organization that always had interesting matchups and fantastic fights. Card's that exceeded the hype and were normally free to watch. Now this organization will be consumed by a much larger one.
The positives here are more than likely a larger salary for the WEC fighters. They will get more exposure on a higher level. They will also have more options about where to fight at.
The biggest negative, is the lightweights that will be cut. We also won't get the WEC superstars on free cards anymore. I think that all in all, the positives outweigh the negatives, but it will be a sad sight to watch the WEC turn into the UFC.
The fighters that are going to be in trouble will surely be Lightweight fighters. This is the only weightclass that the WEC and the UFC have in common which means the lightweight division will be massive post merge. This means that the UFC will have to trim down its roster and cut a good amount of fighters from the lightweight division that just are not at the level of UFC fighters yet.
So with all of this in mind I would like to bid farewell to this wonderful organization that I have come to love. I look forward to many good fights inside of the UFC. Goodbye World Extreme Cagefighting, it was fun while it lasted. Thank you for all of the good memories.
