Is Dana screwing the UFC?

Posted 12-16-2007 at 12:02 PM by pt447
The Randy situation. The mention of AA waiting out his contract...

Is Dana screwing himself and the UFC by treating fighters like commodities to copyright and patent? If there's one thing that M-1 already has over the UFC--and I'm not saying M-1 is anything like a true competitor yet--is it's outright promise to allow fighters to fight wherever they want, whenever they want.

I see MMA right now as very much how baseball was in its early days. run by the owners, and damned be the players. Or in this case, the fighters. Fighters have no rights right now. They get paid what they get paid and they can only make a living on the whim of their "owner". What M-1 seems to realize is that if you give the fighters freedom to fight in various organizations, not only does t hat drive the value of the fighters up, but it creates a huge bidding market for the fighters, as well as specific fights. It demands that organizations compete for the fighters, not the other way around.

I think that if M-1 really takes off, or if any other organizations start to do business like they seem to intend on, then a new age of MMA might begin where promoters compete for the right to present fighters, and host big fights. Imagine all the organizations competing for the chance to hold Randy/Fedor, or any other such "dream fight" that we will never see under the current atmosphere.

If MMA is going to survive Dana's pro-wrestlingization of the sport, then perhaps the only way is to have the fighters be the stars, rather than the organization.

I don't think he is. I think he's doing a good job at running the UFC, but a lot of his choices, while good for the UFC, suck for the fans - such as exclusive contracts. Also, the Couture situation was all Couture. Maybe White did something to make him want to leave but everything we were shown from Couture ended up being his own fault. I can't blame Dana white for Fedor vs Couture not happening either, Fedors demands were too much and I would of said no too. It was just a situation where they couldn't agree, no fault anywhere.
Pride was more like WWE then UFC was. I posted in a thread that UFC was more like prowrestling and I go totally proven wrong. I feel bad for saying it was but pride was closer to WWE =(.

As far as a person goes, I can't stand Dana white.

interesting points. and no, i don't want it like boxing. but until the fighters have a bigger say in their careers, it won't ever be an official "sport"! boxing became what it has because of Don King. he invented media endorsed corruption. It won't happen with MMA. It just won't.

Until the fighters and organizations can come together to make fights happen, for the fans, regardless of individual organizational pride, it won't ever be anything but a second rate sport!

Here's the thing Dana only looks out for the UFC. See here's the thing I don't mind that if he didn't lie and talk about how much he is trying to grow MMA and does everything for the fighters. Dana is trying to grow the UFC and often that is at MMA's expenses.

Frank Shamrock has been talking about MMA being about the fighters and not the orgs and it looks like more guys are taking notice.

Dana does somethings to harm the organisation I think he should lower his profile quite a bit and stop the UFC becoming the Dana White Show. Do you guys remember he was gonna fight Tito? Get a grip! sign the fighters then let Joe work his magic .

this is my point. we're talking about this like pro-wrestling. Tito wants to fight the boss, blah blah blah... what the hell?

legitimize the sport, or get out of the way. Dana brought it to the mainstream, but he has no ability to legitimize it!

GMW it was Tito's request but what self respecting president of a million dollar org would fight his employee. Not even Mark Cuban would do that and it's his money he plays around with it isn't Dana's money it's his job to make the UFC look good and he often doesn't do that.

No, I agree it was a mistake and Dana white has a lot of faults, but I think he takes a lot of shit for issues he is not responsible for.

I do agree with that GMW but by constantly putting him out there he will inevitably take stick for stuff thats not his fault.

i think there needs to be a union for all of the fighters. not just the ones in the ufc but all fighters in mma that way they can work to get better wages etc. also there should be one world champion per weight class not one champ per org. if all of the orgs weren't exclusive and they could share fighters it would make mma a lot better kind of like a league that includes all of the fighters in the world. they could actually have 2 leagues one for the established fighters and one for the b and c level fighters which would encourage the b and c level fighters to try and make it into the a league. it could be like the way baseball is with the triple a and then the pro leagues. but it would never happen b/c everyone is in it for themselves and not the sport. also i think you should have posted this in the ufc forum b/c it is a great thing to discuss and it would get seen by more people there.
