UFC 100: The fights that need/should be there and why
Posted 02-17-2009 at 08:27 PM by Suizida
Hey guys, my first real blog and it is on the most exciting event the UFC has ever done (arguably). The UFC do such a great job at putting on solid cards one after the other with certain cards taking it to the next level (81,84,87,91,92,94) but now the UFC is hitting the big 100. Don't be fooled though this is actually the UFC's 132nd event but for the sake of fun it's the 100th.
And since last year people have been wondering what fights would grace this card so here's my thoughts on what fights will/should be on the card, but only main card
Main-event: GSP v. Thiago Alvez (WW title)
This fight seems to be the most obvious ones as GSP destroyed BJ in his last fight after so much hype including the UFC primetime show. With so much media attention around UFC 94 it supposedly got the most amount of PPV's a UFC has ever received (i think it was 1.3 mil) taking over UFC 92 and also beating De la Hoya/Pacquia. While Thiago has been on a huge tear through the division with his last 3 fights being top 10 opponents.
This fight is most likely GSP's hardest to date, because on paper Thiago is GSP's worst nightmare. An elite striker with some of the best TDD in the business and can also hold his own on the ground with his BJJ black belt.
Another thing to note is that GSP could be the PPV king of 2009. Brock was the PPV king in 2008 with 3 appearences equalling 2.2 million coming only 2nd to Tito in 2006 with 2.25 million. GSP has competed once and had 1.3 mil. With UFC 100 most likely breaking the PPV buy record again he could very well be the sole face of the UFC
Rashad Evans v. Rampage Jackson/Lyoto Machida (LHW Title)
Rashad Evans has recently come out of his shell with 2 stunning ko'es in a row against Chuck and Forrest. But the fact of the matter is, he hasn't been marketed that well, maybe people still have a sour taste in their mouth after his antics in TUF. A fight with Rampage would surely gain viewers and having GSP on the card is always a nice thing to have.but if rampage loses to Jardine, Lyoto steps into the picture. Lyoto is starting to gather a nice following, even with the casual fans after his KO of Thiago Silva. This fight is a hardcore fans dream. Either or Rashad should be on this card
Dan Henderson v. Michael Bisping
after TUF 9 concludes, the coaches should battle it out, and when is there a more fitting time to do it? Bisping is the greatest MMA star from England while Hendo is recognised for his accomplishments, especailly in Pride, obvious choice
Those 3 are the givens, now the other ones are a bit out there but here me out
Chuck Liddell v Forrest Griffin
IF Chuck wins an emphatic fashion against Shogun (which i think will happen) they should finally make the TUF winner v TUF coach match that they tried to make, but Rashad had a different thought about it. Chuck's always down to fight and the fact is, besides Machida; Forrest doesn't have that many other fighters to face.
and the last one
Dustin Hazelett v. Ben Saunders
Albeit random, here me out. This fight was supposed to go down at UFC 96 but due to injuries failed to materialise. Hardcore's wanna see this fight and when you're talking about the next generation of fighters, Dustin Hazelett is on of them. If you wanna make a star, you put him on a star studded card and both of these guys are great great fighters.
But Suizida, why not Kenflo v. BJ or Nog v Cotoure? Good question MMAFORUM. The fact is the ufc still need to produce solid shows for other cards. We don't want the next 2-4 cards to suck because UFC 100 was so awesome, so we save this fights for another time.
