Yes, just reformat the hard drive. It will wipe it and then you can reinstall the Operating System. You just have to actually have the Operating System disk still. That will take off any spyware, viruses, etc... It will not fix any possible hardware issues though.

See thats the thing, my computer didnt come with the operating disk... Any way I can buy it? Acer should have one available right?

Or what happens if I just go buy windows 7? Currently im running vista, will it delete vista and just run 7 with all the new updates?

If you install an OS with an existing one already on the hard drive, I believe the computer will put all of the old files into a different folder. I did it once and it put the old OS into a file called "Windows Old".

If you want to make sure everything is like new, you need to reformat the drive which is very easy assuming you have an Operating System disk.

You can buy a new operating system either online or in stores. I bought Windows 7 home edition for 100 bucks.

Bill Gates has enough money don't give him anymore.

If you're on a tight budget, give FREE a try. It's easy and unless you just have to play the newest, latest greatest games on that laptop it will do anything windows can do usually better and all software is FREE. Thousands of programs and games FREE.

if you don't like it you can always replace it with windoz

i wouldnt recommend going to a Linux distro to a relative beginner.... i know its gotten easier over the years, but still. if you move up to a Win7, remmber to go to Acer's website to get all your drivers installed.

as far as keeping your AV up to date and free, theres alot of options. i use Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials, both free and update often (Avira on my laptop MSE on desktop). also Spybot Search and Destroy with Teatimer watches stuff from being written to the registry, and SpywareBlaster runs in the background and shores up some holes in your browser. Malwarebytes Antimalware is great when something does make it thru your defenses. all these are free, and should be the first things installed on a fresh windows install. i suggest downloading them before formatting and throwing them on a cd or better yet a USB Key, and install them before even connecting to the internet. just in case.

but yeah a windows 7 disk will format the drive for you, just follow the prompts and it will wipe the drive and install clean. thats your best bet, as i dunno if its the same now, but back in the day it only changed files that needed to be changed, and so old problems could still be there if there was a problem with the old install.... so back up what ya need and do a full wipe is generally best.

It may have a extra partition on the Hard drive that contains the initial install OS. Any spyware or virus should not be able to access that. Not sure if Acer does that or not. My Sony Laptops did, if it does you can rebuild from that. Search the web, there will probably be a step by step guide for your particular model.
