It used to be an empty bottle of buckfast, but I repeatedly mistook it for a full one and was disappointed a lot

LyotoLegion, I've got a machete under my bed. No accidents, no aiming, no irresponsible ownership. Guns are dangerous in all forms. You can protect your house without having to pull out a gun.
You may have a machete, but the question is, what does the person breaking into your house have?

I'd feel a lot safer with something that I can hit them with at afar than something I'd have to get close to them with, but that's just me though.

Ihave always been pro gun rights but now especially since I am walking with a cane after having a stroke and can't defend myself without a gun.

Odds are if he is facing a bunch of armed guys him having a gun will just get him dead. If it's one guy - as in the vast majority of break ins - a machete is as good as a gun. Gun is deadly. A machete is crazy and nobody wants to fight with crazy. Not to mention in your home they won't have 27 feet usually.

Just for the record I'm not against guns. My roommate owns quite a few. I don't own any and have no interest in doing so. Guns just don't interest me. Rifles, shotguns, and handguns I am cool with people owning. No civilian needs an automatic weapon. All a civilian is going to do with an automatic weapons is mow his own family down.

.
Well if 2 or 3 guys twice my size break in my house I like my odds a lot better if I have that hk45 of mine. Really all it takes is2 or three shots because the guys run when they find what they are dealing with.

I'm pro-guns because part of being an American is having the right to own them, and stripping rights is never a good thing.

However, when people talk about "how are we supposed to defend ourselves from the government if they take our guns?" I laugh. If the government wanted to constrain its citizens right now, today, it would do so without even the slightest bit of difficulty, your gun in your closet isn't going to do anything, absolutely anything.

Even the fact that you are worried about them "taking your guns" shows just how easy it would be for them to constrain you, like a mommy and daddy taking your Playstation away when you throw a tantrum.

You realize that that is not a common situation right? Most break ins are performed by a single person. If it's a group they tend to go in armed because they are used to subduing the people inside while they ransack the place. You fire 2 or 3 shots - in the dark at vague shapes - and maybe you you scare them off or maybe you turn robbers into murderers when they fire back or maybe you just panicked and shot your wife in the dark.

It's not a clear cut issue. Most fatal gunshot wounds in the home are done by a gun owner to one of the other people living in the house.

Honestly - for most - having a gun in the house for protection is a power fantasy. In their head they see themselves skillfully retrieving it from it's secured location and gunning down the burglar in action movie fantasy. Reality is different. Most people in this situation are shaking so badly that they couldn't hit Rosie O'Donnel if they had bacon wrapped around the barrel.

But that in and of itself serves a purpose. A gun's most extreme benefit is saving your life but most likely it will never have to do so. What it does do well is provide peace of mind. It makes the owner feel secure*.

*Note: This blanket statement does not include paranoid gun nuts. If you believe that the governments and squirrels are working together to make America a Communist state nothing will make you feel secure. Not even those nice young men in white coats who bring you your pills every day at 3.

well one has saved my life only had to show in no use it on the street. Guns on my night stand in a lockbox not hard to get to. Also I have a history of competative tactical shooting. Takes much more skill to use a sword or knife. And like I said before at this time I walk with a cane (because I had a stroke) and could not defend my family or myself.within the equilizer for the handicap and the weak. with anything less than a gun it is nessacy for people like me if I am to defendmyself It's important to be safe with a gun and have a plan in such a situation (so you know where your famly is) but when you do it usually work fine.
