MMA and religion
There was a minor discussion about it in another thread and i didn't want to further derail that one. We see a lot of fighters thanking god for their victory. Is it really right to do so? God didn't sweat his ass off in the gym, god didn't fight that night, god didn't cut your weight. It was all you, not god. What if Jimi Manuwa had said that god helped him get that train wreck of a victory over Kyle Kingsbury? How do you guy's feel about fighters thanking god in helping you beat the crap our of your opponent?

I am a prety religious person so doesnt bother me.
I think is no tanking god for the winning rather than the opportunity to Work for the win. With

I have no feelings about it one way or the other. To me it's the same as thanking your trainers, family, friends, sponsors, or favorite flavor of ice cream. I really don't get outrage one way or another. Bendo gets a lot of hate for it but I don't see why. Thanking God is just a personal expression of belief.
Using the post fight interview to preach is an entirely different animal though...
PS Am I the only person who - just once - wants to see a fighter thank Satan for his victory? Bonus points if it's a Greg Jackson fighter.

I hate it - it really bothers me actually. I don't mind if you believe in God to be honest but thanking him after I fight is silly, Bendo over does it so bad it really winds me up.
Someone thanking Satan would be ace.

Yeah, Im not a fan. Im all for free speach and believing in what ever you want to believe in but it irritates me.
Mainly from a non religious point of view and the fact i find the whole 'thanking god for things' a bit silly.
For instance, Bendo ALWAYS goes on about god when he wins, but what if 2 very religious God thankers are fighting each other. Does the one who loses think that god did him no favours this time out? does he think That god likes the other guy better? I have no idea of how to rationalise someone thanking God for a victory as when they lose what do they think from a religious point of view?

My religious views (or lack there of) aside, it's just arrogance. To think an almighty being chose you over another one of his 'children' just reeks of bad sportsmanship in my eyes.
Don't like it. Never have, never will. But I've also stopped bitching about it. I go and get some food/make a drink after a Bendo fight now.

Pretty much this. It's bullshit, it's hypocritical and in Bendo's case, extremely overdone. If you feel you have to do something, why not just do a quick cross over the chest (dunno what it's called) like footy players do when they enter the pitch.

It's arrogant and silly, as others have said. People have the right to say what they want on the subject of religion so I don't think people should "stop" doing it, cause it's their right to. If you do thank "god" for your victory, you should have your belt stripped for taking the ultimate steroid. Having "god" winning your fights for you is cheating, is it not?

I'm not religious but I don't have a problem with someone like Benson Henderson saying his little "I can do all things through Christ" that he does every post fight interview. Giving thanks to God after an accomplishment is extremely common. You can thank God for winning an Emmy, you can thank him for winning a UFC title or even just winning a fight.

Hmm.
I'm trying to recall if most of these guys actually thank God for winning, or just thank God in the general, "Thanks be to Jesus/All praise to Allah"- kind of way.
Regardless- If a guy believes in an omnipotent/omniscient God, then it was God's will that the dude in question won.
I guess it makes sense in that regard to thank Him.
