My brother had bought me the first four books of Game of Thrones for my birthday last year.
I was a little intimidated considering the size of the work, but after having gotten into book 4 now, I have to say that this is the finest story that I have ever read in my entire life, and I've read a great many books.
The depth of the characters is unlike anything I've seen before. My favorites are Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Danaerys Targaryen, and The Hound. I've really enjoyed going to deviant art and saving a ton of fan art regarding the books.
I had purchased season 1 one blu ray and just enjoyed the hell out of them and I've got season 2 on order for whenever they come out. I'll wait to see season 3 until it comes to blu ray since I don't have HBO and do not want to download them.
I hope Mr. Martin gets those last two books out sooner rather than later. I don't think I've ever been enthralled with books so much as I am with these.

I almost regret reading the books now, I think reading the books after youve seen the show is probably better. There are some shock elements which we'll see coming. But I still cant wait for this. Bread and salt anyone?

In a paralell universe where there was no Breaking Bad, I would have to agree.

I feel the opposite Luck, I'm SO glad I'd read the books before I saw the show. I'm always a 'book first' person though.
I really cannot wait for Winds of Winter You can tell that the 6th and 7th books are going to have all kinds of crazy shit happening, and some answers finally.

The best aspect of GOT is undoubtedly the sheer depth of the characters involved. I feel like at least 5 individual characters could even branch off into their very own, unique storys/books/tv shows. They're that good.
If HBO stay faithful to the book for this series, then it will quite easily be the best series yet, the book is packed with action and twists and turns.
Fave GOT characters people?
Tyrion
Varys
Petyr Baelish
Jaime Lannister
Joeffrey!!!! - best villain ever
(No order) Varys and Baelish are the true players of the game of thrones how ever. I just love how crafty, intelligent and sly they both are.

This is a fun "game" to play. Never quite liked Peter Dinklage as an actor before GOT because he always had this dry humour in all his characters, but he really shines as Tyrion Lannister and deserved that Emmy. He's got the best lines.
Gotta go with Rob, Ned Stark and Lady Stark. Stoic and honourable.
Varys is an interesting character, but Baelish is a weasel...a conniving pimp who does happen to know how to play the game. Joeffrey does play a good villain like Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus in Gladiator. You just know his end will come sooner than later.
Jaime is an cockey bastard, funny at times, but arrogant.
That mysterious assassin was actually pretty bad ass. Oh, Lord Stannis is someone I relate to sans having a freaky side kick sorceror.
Honourable mentions goes to Cersei. Really the whole series revolves around two powerful woman.

In the show Tywin is my favourite character. They really hit the nail with him. In the books there are loads: Jamie, Theon, Stannis, The Hound, Littlefinger, Tyrion, The Blackfish, Lancel and Osmund Kettleblack and probably Moon Boy for all I know.
