It's the best-selling FPS franchise of all time behind Battlefield. I suppose it seems kind of generic today but back when Halo 1 came out its combination of land and air vehicles, regenerating shields, dual-wielding, co-op multiplayer, huge maps, and incredible graphics was revolutionary. Lots of titles have copied the hell out of it.

I never downplayed the gameplay. It plays fantastically. It's the story and characters that bore the hell out of me. I've played the multiplayer many times. So maybe you guys could back off on trying to lambast me for not sucking every inch of Halo's dick?
And the millions and millions of fans argument will never mean anything to me. I make my own judgements. Lots of people liked Transformers 2 and Fight Club. Doesn't make them good.
By the by... I've played Halo 4. It is exactly what I said it is. I just didn't pretty it up. If you liked Halo 1, 2, and 3 you'll like 4. If you didn't you won't like this one.
Edit: Just looked it up. Battlefield is the number 2 best selling FPS franchise. Halo number 3 at 50 million and 42 million respectively. Call of Duty is the number 1 at 100 million copies sold.

That's fine that it bores you but to say someone will only like it if they enjoy bland generic concepts is definitely downplaying the game.
And no Halo isn't generic in the video game world, it paved the way for all of these next gen games. It is simply the next installment in the story.

Storywise it is generic. Anything I call bland in it is the story and the characters. Both are bland. Exceptionally generic in the sci-fi mold. There is no depth to either but it's a FPS. A FPS being good does not rely on it's story or characters. I think Call of Duty and Battlefield are both great FPS's. Neither have more than the barest baseline of character or story. They would need filling out to make a Die Hard movie script.
Unreal Tournament was one of the best FPS's of all time - that Halo modeled many of it's features after - and it wasn't because of it's story and depth of character. Gears of War is the exact same thing. It is what is. The story in an FPS is the video game world's equivalent of a Michael Bay movie. It's there to get you from explosion to explosion. Nothing more.

Black Ops 2 gets shipped out to me tomorrow, reaches here the 14th. It's a little odd 'cause I purchased the Wii U edition, and the console doesn't release until the 18th.
I beat Okami, man that's a long game. It's a game that's really great, but it overstays its welcome by about 5-10 hours.
I'm thinking about trying Oddworld: Strangers Wrath HD.

I'm hoping it comes out this month, generally speaking it should come out late this month like the 26th area, but since it's the last episode it's possible they will work more on it, make it a little longer and more extensive, so it might not be out until December.

Funny thing about the Boston Massacre in Assassins Creed. Only five people got killed during the shooting. The real massacre happened after the British troops started chasing me all over Boston. I must have killed over twenty soldiers before I was able to get my notoriety down. How come we never heard about that in the history books lol. Man, I suck at stealth in this game.

I just got Halo 4 for free.
I seriously had no interest in playing it, but someone gifted it to me so... yeah, I'll be hopping on and trying it out tomorrow.
