It's very rare you get the two things mixed together, exceptions like you pointed out though, district 9, Terminator 2 (special effects still look good to this day as well) etc.

I can appreciate and enjoy both types, providing that the story/dialogue/character's aren't THAT BAD.

Well have you seen the new transformers? It advertises a war between humans and the decepticons, but that's not actually how it is at all. The entire second half of the film is just all out robot warfare.

The robots take up most of the second half of the film.

Off topic but speaking about films with great CGI and great characters and story. KUNG FU HUSTLE. If you haven't seen this film yet, then watch it ASAP. It's in my top 10

I have to disagree with you their. The second half focused on Tyrese Gibson and Josh Duhamel getting attacked by robots. When its not focusing on those two it focus on --guess who-- Shia Lebeouf and his girlfriend. Robots themselves were secondary characters. Hell, the only time we saw the autobots is when the humans were in serious trouble. Then when the humans are out of danger they disappear and we follow the humans again.

Oh and I have seen the film. I know, I'm complaining about this movie making so much money and I'm one of those people who are responsible. What can I say I'm a hypocrite.

You forget that this isn't just some brutal sport where everyones out to kill each other. Its much more like a game of physical chess.-looney liam

I went to see it two nights ago, was with my girlfriend, went to see something else but missed it (she wasn't ready in time) so went to see this.

Awful. Awful movie. I despise Michael Bay so much, exceptional special effects will never mask a sub-standard plot, wooden acting and failed attempts at childish comedy, he is such a hack it is unreal. If you want to have a perpetual boner for the U.S military, then make a film about them, fine, if you want to make a really unfunny and childish comedy, then fine go do that, just keep the butchering of my favorite thing since I was a kid to yourself you dick.

I love Transformers, hence the nerd rage going on.

Thanks to Leakler for the sig

Go back and watch Beast Wars fellas.

This was a kids movie, for kids.

I know it's kind of cool looking and you want to have it be something you can enjoy too, but the old cartoon was equally about humans and doubly as cheesy. (believe it or not).

IN MY OPINION. If you are not a kid and you put energy into hating this movie - you are wasting your adult time :[

Me, going back on several occasions and watching all three seasons of Beast Wars - that is a much more valuable use of time. :]

The thing is... its not a kids movie. Sure, it seems that way, but clearly its designed for juvenile fathers who want to be amused when they take their 10 year old to watch. The thing with kids is that they dont give a shit if the special effects cost $1000 or $100 million. They simply dont see the differences like an adult would. So, I ask you, why spend all that money? Because, the reality is, its for the dads. They know it. I know it.

The same reason why films like Shrek are full of ridiculous innuendo that only adults would understand. So, while the kids are pointing at the pretty pictures, the adults have something to laugh at. If these films didnt include adult stuff, and made them purely for children, then no adults would take their kids to watch.

I'm not speculating here. Ive been involved with films and videos for ages and have had some very interesting conversations over the years with film industry insiders and marketers. Its all about targeting the adults in reality. they are the ones with the money after all.

In closing, I bet FAR more over 20 year olds have seen Transformers then under 20.

That is very true, but they are wasting there adult time if they are looking for perfection is all I am saying.

The very nature of the old cartoon, it's cheesiness and broken plot lines up directly with these new movies. I didn't bother watching this new one since I did not enjoy the second, but I guess I have the feeling of: If you can't just appreciate the special effects, then you might be missing the point.

I think maybe you don't want to recognize the amount of merchandise they sell to kids after they see this movie. These kids want to collect every freaking transformer because they are tried and true fun. These kids aren't being tricked into having fun with these toys, they are actually fun. Kids have been playing with different transformers from like 1985-2011, and these movies, albeit expensive, are a lisence to make years and years of profit from toys, videogames, etc. I can't hate on that, I was one of those kids.

I guess where I am coming from is the "WTF, why don't you have anything better to do then?" Camp.

Bottom line for me, even THE Transformers movie sucked balls and it doesn't hold up unless you're really nostalgic. I've cried during this movie, but that's beside the point...

I just don't get the hate for these movies, it's really simple. We, the dudes of this world, enjoy simple things. Big booms, robots on a rampage, war, fighting, sex, alcohol, meat and stuff like that. Transformers fits perfectly into that?

As adult as some of us are, it's ok to disconnect your brain from time to time and just enjoy some action. Hell, Arnold, Sly, JCVD and many others made a living off of it

Release your inner dudes, I implore you!
