The Pacific
I know this mini-series came out on DVD around Christmas but I just watched it. for those who have not seen it here is a quick overview.

The series is a sister show to the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers and focuses on the United States Marine Corps' actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations within the wider Pacific. Whereas Band of Brothers followed one company of the 506th Parachute Infantry through the European Theater, The Pacific centers on the experiences of three Marines (Eugene Sledge, Robert Leckie and John Basilone ) who were all in different Regiments of the 1st Marine Division .

This show hit close to home with me. I served in the Marine Corps and was in the 1st Marine Div. And anyone who is a Marine knows those three names. There is another person that is in the series ....a Marine that set the bar for the years to come Chesty Puller. I knew the stories before I watched this and have read many books about it. This series brings what I had in my head to life! If you can go this whole series with dry eyes I will be surprised!

Glad this thread got a bump, love war stories and this one looks pretty good.

Being from an Army family I've heard a ton of Marine jokes and vice versa from other military family friends...always found it funny that opposing armed forces degrade and make light of each others accomplishments.

I'd bet you have some funny stories about that huh G:laugh:

Found it on Amazon for 40 bucks, looking forward to it:thumb02:

Lol too many to count! Marines are extremely proud of their history. You can go to any Marine....And I do mean any Marine and ask them when is the Marine Corps' Birthday and they will tell you with out thinking. Nov 10 1775 !!! Many of the biggest battles for the Marine Corps. were in WWI and II. It's great to see history in a big production like this.

I've yet to watch it through, I've seen the first episode. But wanted to watch the rest in HD, and watch them one after the other.

I loved Band of Brothers, so only have high hopes for The Pacific.

I doubt I'll ever view it the same as you though G, I just don't have that experience or world knowledge to compare. I can't imagine what it must be like for a Marine to watch these shows.

I can see what they mean through the eyes of a Marine, I myself am not a Marine but my girlfriends grandfather was a Marine and received the Navy Cross (its equivalent in the Army The Distinguished Service Cross) because of his actions in Okinawa where after his gun jammed he used his bare hands to 8 enemy soldiers and lived to tell the tale. Quite remarkable when you see a pretty accurate portrayal of what the Pacific Theater was like.

I had relatives and acquaintances who served, but I personally happen to enjoy war films immensely. Band Of Brothers is my all time favorite.

Anybody remember Ronald Spears and Wild Bill! Trying to find the book on Maj. Winters.

Great article on Major Winters (RIP.)

I've read "Beyond Band Of Brothers" By Maj Winters. It tells some of the untold stories left out. It follows the same time line and story but adds so much more.
