Dexter is a horrible show, Michael C Hall is fantastic and they get quality guest stars that sell it. But the writing, directing, pacing, and supporting work by the regulars is sub standard.
That nomination should have gone to The Walking Dead, True Blood, Fringe, Justified

Which would you like for me to address first, how about continuity how Rita goes from a frail PTSD character in season one to a raging bitch in the following seasons. Ofcourse keep in mind she still got a case of the stupids when she believed everything Dexter said especially after finding out he was a "drug addict". Or how about how they changed Dexter's first kill, in the early seasons it was the nurse of death to save Harry's life and gave him an extra year. Couple years later it's someone different, Harry is healthy and seeing Dexter kill someone drives him to suicide. You then have LaGuerta who has deep and major personality changes every season.
Why don't we also talk about pacing, the penultimate episode of the season is always amazing but only in season 2 and 4 were the finales not horrible, imbalanced and just plain weird.

Sounds like a lot of plot holes, I miss the Sopranos

Rita - Character growth? You see her start to move on from the abuse she sustained and grow more comfortable with her relationship with Dexter. She's bitchy a lot due to the fact she knows Dexter isn't being honest with her about something big.
Dexter's kill - The nurse was his first kill in the tv series, his Father commited suicide after SEEING the other kill in progress. He never saw the nurse die, but seeing the body on the table of the other victim was too much for him so he committed suicide. He also never 'died' in hospital. He got better after Dexter killed the nurse that was poisoning him, they state it gave him another year of life. Which fits the timeline for him seeing Dexter at work and killing himself. Dexter learns later on that it was suicide and not a heart attack.
LaGuerta - She's always been a **** tbh, she's selfish, arrogant and stuck up through out all of the seasons.
Finales and pacing - Purely opinion. I found each series to pace well inside their respective 12 episodes and found every single one exciting. Season 5 was the weakest series for me but I still loved it.
