mmamania interview with Koscheck. He says he wants to fight twelve times next year.

Man, he's already one of the most active fighters out there. I dunno if he's serious. I think it's impossible.

---Quote---
Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): I wanted to start off getting your thoughts on Mike Swick's fight at UFC 105 with Dan Hardy. What did you think about how the fight played out and what went wrong for Mike?

Josh Koscheck: I really would prefer to not answer any questions about that right now. I haven't really got to speak directly with Mike Swick. I'm focused on my fight and would prefer to keep the focus on that.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): A lot has been made recently about the so-called "feud" between you and Matt Hughes. What originally made you call him out after you beat Frank Trigg? It seemed like it kind of came out of left field at the time.

Josh Koscheck: I've been trying to get that fight for a number of years now. Probably three years. He just doesn't want to fight me. I called him out. Usually when people call you out and talk shit usually you step up and say, "Yeah, I'll fight the guy." Apparently he doesn't want to fight me so I guess it's almost pointless for us to even talk about Matt Hughes. (laughs)

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): You were scheduled to face Mike Pierce in January so how did your fight with Anthony Johnson come about?

Josh Koscheck: I heard the UFC 106 card was in need of some fighters. I had my management call the UFC and let them know I'd fight whoever, just get me an opponent and I'll fight. Management put it in their ear and they said, "Yeah, that's a great idea. How about co-main event against Anthony Johnson?" I said, "Okay done deal."

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): It seems like you are a lot more active than most guys and never hesitate to jump at a fight even on short notice. You're one of the few who does this repeatedly. Do you get antsy after a few consecutive weeks of training? What is your mindset?

Josh Koscheck: I'm always training. I'm two or three weeks away from being in great shape always. My mindset is if I want to make money I need to be fighting. If I want to get a title shot I need to be fighting. Basically, I need to be in the cage. If I'm just sitting around waiting there is no opportunity for me to take those next steps.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson trains at AKA with you but is also a coach and good friend of Anthony Johnson. Is that a conflict of interest? What do you think about this situation?

Josh Koscheck: I won't throw him under the bus, but he's been my training partner for five years now. He's been my friend. I actually live with him right now. I knew that he was training Anthony Johnson prior to this fight. He's not training him right now. Josh can do what he wants in his free time, but out of respect for me he said he wasn't going to train him.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): What is Johnson's biggest strength in your opinion?

Josh Koscheck: I think he's got some power in his punches. I think that's his biggest strength. I think the UFC did a very good job of building him and almost babying him. He hasn't really fought anybody yet in the UFC. This will be his first test. We're going to see how mentally tough this kid is and if he has the heart to be a champion.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Do you feel any pressure to stand up and bang with him and make it exciting for the fans?

Josh Koscheck: I don't feel any pressure at all in my fights. I can just tell you this fight won't go to a decision.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): We don't really know what kind of ground game Johnson has because he hasn't really needed it yet. Is that an area you're going to try to exploit?

Josh Koscheck: Like I said, I don't talk too much game plan. I'm just going to let you known that this fight won't go to the judges.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Are you going to plan on continuing to call out Hughes going forward? If you beat Johnson are you going to call him out again until he takes the fight?

Josh Koscheck: He's not going to take the fight. He doesn't want to fight me. The UFC must feel bad for him. They just want to continue to give him easy fights and let him retire with a winning record or in a winning way or whatever. *For me, I don't care who I fight. I don't care where I fight. I don't care how often I fight. My goal next year is to fight twelve times.*

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): I actually spoke with Johnson last night and I asked him what would happen if he ends up on his back at any point in the fight. He told me, "I can do enough to survive. I'm not a black belt or anything like that. I don't want to submit you. I know how to hold on to you and have the ref stand us up, let's put it that way." Your thoughts on this statement?

Josh Koscheck: (laughs) That's funny! He's going to hold on and let the ref stand us up? That's cool, whatever. If we end up on the ground that's not a good philosophy. I've trained with Anthony. I know what he has on the ground. I know he's a part time fighter. He's not training year round like me. I know his jiu-jitsu coach that teaches there (at Cung Le's gym), Paul Schreiner. He's never been to one jiu-jitsu class since Schreiner, who is a black belt in jiu-jitsu, has been there.

I'm not concerned to fight this fight on the feet. I'm not concerned to fight this fight on the ground to be honest with you. It depends on how I feel on Saturday night when I'm in the locker room warming up. Then I'll make the decision as to where I'll fight.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Johnson also told me he was at 185 pounds last night and is comfortably in line to make the cut. How is your weight by the way? What are you at right now?

Josh Koscheck: I woke up this morning at 181 pounds. I think I'm on track. I've never had a weight issue. I'm a little bit mentally tougher than that to puss out and not make weight.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): What happens if Johnson comes in at 175 or 176 pounds on Friday?

Josh Koscheck: That's not going to change my philosophy. I'm still going to beat his ass. I'm going on with the fight. I don't care if he makes weight or he doesn't make weight. That's not up to me. That's up to him. At the end of the day I'm here to fight. If he doesn't make weight he's still going to get beat down.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): You're one of the few guys that have taken Georges St. Pierre to a decision. How much have you improved since you fought him and do you feel like things would go differently in a rematch?

Josh Koscheck: I'm not really, obviously, thinking about that right now. *After Saturday night if I'm not fighting St. Pierre next I'll call people up and I'll fight every three weeks. I'll have three weeks of training and then I'll fight every month next year. That's the plan. If I'm not fighting him next then line them up and let me fight twelve people so I can make some real money and then I'll fight St. Pierre.*

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Anything you'd like to pass along to your fans out there or any sponsors you would like to thank at this time?

Josh Koscheck: They can check me out on Twitter, @JoshKoscheck. All my sponsors. I plug them on my Twitter page so it's all good.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Josh, I appreciate the time. Good luck on Saturday.

Josh Koscheck: Alright, thank you.

*_J-Mac's UFC 106 picks_*
Jason MacDonald
November 19, 2009

I'm back in Las Vegas for another couple of weeks to finish off a training camp and it has been going well down here. It's like last time I have the ability to train with a lot of top-notch guys. There's a bunch preparing for upcoming fights, such as Martin Kampmann, Mike Pyle and Tyson Griffin. Gray Maynard and Yoshihiro Akiyama have also been around at Xtreme Couture.

It's totally different and refreshing. When I'm at home training, any time I take even a one-minute break, I'm thinking about what I'm going to do for my next five-minute round. But here, we just show up and train. You do your warm up and then you get to work sparring, then drills and then conditioning.

It takes the thinking out of it you just work hard and do your best. Two weeks away from a fight, that's exactly what I need. I'm not looking to learn new things, I'm just trying to get into the best shape I can possibly be.

On Wednesday, I watched the WEC after practice. Usually the WEC has lots of great fights, particularly because the smaller guys can go, go go. And they're passionate. And because they don't have the power of the bigger guys, they hit each other with a lot more shots.

Well last night, I was totally disappointed. It's the first time I remember watching the WEC and thinking those fights weren't very good. The McCullough fight was bad and the Garcia fight was bad.

As for the main event, I'm a big fan of Jose Aldo and a big fan of Mike Brown. I'm not sure who's going to beat Aldo at this point. He's so fast and so powerful at that weight. He looks like a smaller version of Anderson Silva standing. I know they're trying to get Urijah Faber back in line to fight for the title, but I'm not sure he'd do any better against Aldo. We were thinking of buying tickets to the show; I'm certainly glad we didn't.

But I am going to the fights on Saturday night. I've jumped back and forth on whom I think's going to win the Tito-Forrest rematch. I thought at first Tito was going to win, then I thought Forrest was going to win, now I'm back to thinking Forrest is going to win.

I thought maybe it would be bad for Tito to be away from the ring for so long, he's got two new babies and is getting older. But we're going to see him for the first time healthy and extremely hungry having not fight for a long time. He'll have a lot of time to prepare.

Meanwhile I really think Forrest is on a bit of a slide. The fight against Anderson took a toll on him mentally. I just don't see him being quite as aggressive. I see Tito putting him on his back and grounding out a victory or even stopping him by TKO.

*Anthony Johnson vs. Josh Koscheck*

I personally think Johnson will be too big for Koscheck. I think Johnson will make weight this time, learning his lesson from losing his bonus last time (last month when he fought Yoshiyuki Yoshida. And with one training camp going right into another, he should be able to make weight. Koscheck is a great wrestler, but Johnson is a huge welterweight and I see him TKO'ing Koscheck.

*Phil Baroni vs. Amir Sadollah*

My first thought is, it surprised me to see this fight on the main card. Baroni is back in the UFC, coming off a loss outside the UFC. And he's fighting Amir, a guy with only a couple pro fights and he lost his last one. My second thought is, if Baroni doesn't knock out Amir in the first minute and a half, I think Amir will win. Because otherwise, I believe Baroni will run out of gas.

*Luiz Cane vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira*

I'm going to go with Cane. He really impressed me in Montreal when he fought Steve Cantwell. I really thought Cantwell might be the next big thing in the light heavyweight division, but Cane came out and picked him apart. So I say Cane by TKO.

*Marcus Davis vs. Ben Saunders*

Marcus Davis, for sure. I don't think Saunders is at that level yet to fight those guys. We've seen that with his fight against Swick. I just think Davis has too much experience for him. He'll win that one.

*Kendall Grove vs. Jake Rosholt*

I think Grove should be able to take Rosholt. He looked improved against Chris Leben, but I'll pick Grove to use his reach and keep the fight standing.

*Jason Dent vs. George Sotiropolous*

I'm going to pick Sotiropolous because I think he's really good. He impressed me on the show and in the fights he's had in the UFC. I'm going to pick him to beat Dent pretty easily.

Marcus Davis, for sure. I don't think Saunders is at that level yet to fight those guys. We've seen that with his fight against Swick. I just think Davis has too much experience for him. He'll win that one.

Kendall Grove vs. Jake Rosholt

I think Grove should be able to take Rosholt. He looked improved against Chris Leben, but I'll pick Grove to use his reach and keep the fight standing.

Jason Dent vs. George Sotiropolous

I'm going to pick Sotiropolous because I think he's really good. He impressed me on the show and in the fights he's had in the UFC. I'm going to pick him to beat Dent pretty easily.

*Pros Pick: Griffin vs Ortiz 2
*

---Quote---
For a fight that was not supposed to rest atop the marquee, the rematch between former light heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin at UFC 106 this Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas has drawn plenty of attention.

Ortiz, who has not posted a win inside the Octagon in more than three years, took a controversial split decision from Griffin at UFC 59 in April 2006. The defeat was Griffin’s first inside the UFC but did little to slow the momentum he had built on Season 1 of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Now, they meet again.

Sherdog.com recently gathered predictions from a number of professional fighters and trainers to gauge how they think the UFC 106 centerpiece will play out.

Charlie Brenneman: Forrest will take this one. Ortiz will look to impose his will through takedowns and ground-and-pound, but ring rust and fatigue will be factors. Forrest may be down on the scorecards late in the fight, but I’m calling a third-round TKO for Griffin. He’s hungrier than ever and will do nearly anything to erase the bad taste left from the Anderson Silva destruction.

Dewey Cooper: I like both guys in this matchup. My heart goes out to Forrest because of what he went through in the Anderson Silva fight. I just don’t know if he has totally healed up psychologically from that fight. The first fight was very close between the two of them. I felt Forrest had pulled it out slightly. This time around, I feel it will be the same type of fight. Tito is a vet, so cage rust should not be a factor. If anything, the break from fighting should benefit him. I see a close fight -- either a draw, or Tito will get the nod. Whether it’s deserved or not will be the question.

Mike Ciesnolevicz: I was out at the first fight live, and I felt Forrest got robbed and should have won the decision. However, after I re-watched the fight at home, I realized Tito did enough to pull out the win and the decision by the judges was correct. This time around, it will be a more interesting fight. Forrest is way more seasoned and has been fighting top-level competition, but I did see him get TKO’d by [Keith] Jardine, Rashad [Evans] and Anderson Silva. Tito is coming back from surgery, and I think almost two years out of the competitive game could be a big factor. But I think Tito is gonna use his wrestling and control and take Forrest to the mat to score points and big elbows. I don’t think Tito will out-jiu-jitsu Forrest on the mat, but I do think he will beat him up with ground-and-pound and probably win by TKO in the second round, or, if it goes all three rounds, I see a unanimous decision.

Kit Cope: “Durability” is synonymous with “short career.” In case you haven’t noticed, the lights turn off a bit easier every time for Forrest. I’m not saying he’s done. He’s still a banger, which is exciting to watch, but Tito has a new fire under his ass, and though he may not knock Forrest out, that’s still gotta be something in Griffin’s head that may make him apprehensive. Tito wins this one by controlling Forrest and beating him to the punch or shot or position.

Patrick Cote: I’ll go with Ortiz. He needs a big fight, and I don’t know if Forrest will be able to bounce back from his last beating.

Scott Bieri: Layoffs, honeymoons, twin babies, surgeries and previous losses are a few things to consider in this fight. All due respect to a pioneer -- and a catalyst to the popularity of MMA -- but a year and a half layoff to an already under-evolved fighter is the biggest issue going in. It seems Tito would love to be bullying past-prime fighters into retirement [but] Forrest Griffin is not that guy. This is an excellent platform for Forrest to regain his confidence. Griffin [will be] in the driver’s seat on the way to a unanimous decision win.

Ray Elbe: Forrest Griffin. No way he misses that super-sized dome piece.

Stephane Vigneault: I see Tito coming back stronger from his layoff. Forrest is in a bad moment of his career, I think. I see Tito winning a unanimous ground-and-pound decision.

Shamar Bailey: Given Forrest’s improvements as a fighter, his growth in confidence and Tito’s layoff since their first meeting, I don’t see Forrest losing this one unless Tito can take Forrest down and inflict damage for extended lengths of time. I’m picking Forrest by decision.

Gabe Ruediger: Tito is coming off of a serious injury and over a year layoff. That’s a long time to be away from the sport. Forrest may be coming off a loss, but he seems like the type that would use that as motivation. Tito will do what he always does -- strike a little bit and try for a takedown. Game planning for Tito is not rocket science, and Forrest should come in with the right strategy. I’m going with Forrest by decision.

Brad Pickett: I think this has the potential to be a great fight and think that the fans will be the winners.

Eddy Millis: Interesting fight, Tito and Griffin. So my prediction is going to be based on what I hope the outcome will be. I think if Tito comes in the way I believe he will, then he pummels Griffin by round two.

James Zikic: Tito will win on points.

Elvis Sinosic: Both guys need a victory. Desperation will make this an exciting match. Forrest is coming off some hard losses. Tito is coming off a long layoff after a serious injury and surgery and some long negotiations to get back into the UFC. The last fight was very close. Tito dominated the first round, and Forrest came back in the last two. The question is which will affect each fighter more. Will Forrest’s recent losses have more of an effect, or will Tito’s time off and surgery have the great effect? I think Tito’s time off and his recent surgery is more likely to come into play. Forrest has lost recently, but he lost in the striking range to explosive, accurate fighters with KO power. This is not an issue with Tito. With Tito, Forrest will need to do his best to stay off his back, which, in turn, leads to Tito’s situation. Tito needs to put Forrest on his back and punish him from the top position. Now, if Tito’s back is 100 percent and he has the takedown ability from when he was in his prime and the cardio to go with it, Forrest will be in a lot of trouble, and I could see Tito winning a decision or even possibly a TKO, especially if he can keep up the pressure for three rounds. The problem is that I think his back injury and surgery will play a bigger part than Forrest’s recent losses. Tito relies on his takedowns, and his back will not only need to be 100 percent, it will have needed to be 100 percent the entire lead-up to this fight. I think that Forrest will be able to keep Tito off. I don’t think he’ll get caught the same way he did in the first fight. He’ll be able to pressure Tito and put him on the back foot. I see Forrest winning this fight via decision.

Jason Lambert: Forrest by TKO.

Robin Black: I like this fight. The last one was a great fight, and I thought Forrest won it. I think Forrest will win this one, too. Tito will probably be looking pretty scary in a fight or two, but I think a highly motivated Forrest Griffin is just gonna be too much for him for a first fight after a long layoff. Forrest is going to come in, have a good performance and welcome the keyboard warriors back on the bandwagon. Tito is going to go back to Big Bear and continue rebuilding for a run at the title. This fight is just too much too soon for him.

Ryan White: This is going to be a great rematch, and no matter who wins, it’s going to be one of the best fights of the year and will put the winner back on the ladder to the title.

Billy MacDonald: The winner on this one should be the fans. Tito, back to himself after nagging injuries, and what should be a very focused Forrest Griffin. Personally, I think Griffin comes in a little gunshy, which will allow Tito to control the pace of round one. Forrest gets into the action a little more and starts to stand in the pocket with Tito, which should leave it even after two. Round three will begin with Forrest peppering Tito with jabs and leg kicks. Tito will shoot in on Forrest but won’t be able to take him down. Forrest wins via decision, 29-28.

Jason Zorthian: Forrest via round one, angry redeeming knockout.

Jeff Monson: Griffin by decision.

Travis Lutter: I think Tito will win this one, but I think it will be fun to watch.

Ricardo Liborio: Forrest by decision.

Mike Whitehead: Forrest by decision.

Roland Sarria: Forrest will win a decision.

Zac George: Tito secures early takedown and a little ground-and-pound. Forrest wakes up at the end of the first and takes over. Forrest [wins a] decision, unless Tito tags Jenna [Jameson] in. Then [it will be] Jenna via armbar.

Melvin Guillard: I predict Griffin to kick Tito’s ass.

Mac Danzig: Seven years ago, I was coming off a decision loss in the WEC that was held in Connecticut. As if a five-hour plane ride back home after a disappointing loss wasn’t miserable enough, Tito Ortiz was sitting directly in front of me. He had been wearing his UFC belt everywhere the entire weekend of the fight and was still wearing it in the airport and now on the plane ride home, too. He had to turn it backwards to comfortably sit on the plane. He proceeded to tilt his seat back as far as it could possibly go. This left nothing in my forward vision except for a giant yellow head, not to mention the fact that his seat was basically in my lap, which was more than mildly uncomfortable. Over the course of the next five hours, I tried my best to sleep, but every time I opened my eyes, there was a huge sphere of yellow hairs with dark roots coming in no less than 12 inches from my face. I was bordered on the right by a window and on the left by Colin Oyama. Luckily for me, I was able to suppress this memory for quite some time, but after seeing that giant yellow head bounce around the ring a few times afterward, I’d get flashbacks. Rumor had it that just a few weeks earlier, Lee Murray soccer-kicked a giant yellow beach ball in a British pub. Forrest by TKO in round three.

Chris Weidman: I think Tito Ortiz by decision. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Forrest Griffin and what he has accomplished in his storied career. Tito has a new-found respect and passion for the sport and what it takes to be at the top. I think Tito has as matured as a person and will avoid bad situations. He will avoid standing up and take it to the ground to grind out a three-round victory.

Hey dudes,

I guess this is becoming a tradition for me to start a betting thread. I did just OK on UFC 105 - damn Dan Hardy! I'm making three picks for 106. Boring since I'm going with all favorites...

Griffin -135: I just can't believe Tito is really back. He's old. I think Forrest kicks the crap out of his legs and wins on points.

Johnson -135: I think Koscheck will be dumb and let his pride take over, get caught up trying to strike. That's when Rumble takes his head off.

Nogueira -140: I like Cane but I think Little Nog is a big step up in competition. I think Little Nog taps him out.

Agree/disagree folks? I get my UFC 106 odds from this sportsbook (http://www.betonline.com/sportsbook).

:thumbsup:Fight bonuses,:confused02:
Are they a good thing?, is it neccessary to really have them?
Personally i am unsure, yes fighters get a purse and rightfully so, however does a chance of KO of the night etc encourage fighters especially those on the lower part of the card to take unneccesary risks to their health?
Is a fighters purse really what they only deserve for a fight?
Im sitting on the fence for this one, but seeing there are quite a few intelligent posters on this forum i would like to hear the fors and againsts etc as there is a lot of potential 'meat' on this thread

Is a fighters purse really what they only deserve for a fight?
Im sitting on the fence for this one, but seeing there are quite a few intelligent posters on this forum i would like to hear the fors and againsts etc as there is a lot of potential 'meat' on this thread

Cedric (Houston)

Thanks for knocking out Bisping!! It's time for you to get a title shot. Why have you not gotten another one?

Dan Henderson (12:49 PM)

Ask Dana.

Dustin Wardle (UT)

When will we see you fight again, I am getting sick of waiting?

Dan Henderson (12:49 PM)

Me too.

Harry (Cleveland)

If you could pick your opponents for your next fight from any organization, who would you like to fight?

Dan Henderson (12:54 PM)

Anderson Silva.

Rick (NYC)

What was your impression of the Fedor fight?

Dan Henderson (1:00 PM)

Great fight. I think Rogers was going to be dangerous to him and had size on him. But Fedor is just an animal, especially when he's in shape. He looked in shape. I thought it was a great finish.

personally i would change the judges, maybe have them go a judging process so they are more equipped to judge the fights.

_Mac Danzig_: Seven years ago, I was coming off a decision loss in the WEC that was held in Connecticut.

Haha made me lough for good 2 minutes
