Merging Threads

I hate when small specific threads get merged into giant threads. It makes it impossible to keep track of that specific conversation or topic without scrolling through endless unrelated pages. It also kills smaller debates and conversations as they get lost.

This is honestly my biggest criticism and suggestion for this forum. What kind of (potential) new member is going to log onto these forums and be like "oh hey, I feel like reading 112 pages of "all things ...". It just makes conversations disorganized and threads way too long and disjointed.

Why not let small threads die and the interesting ones stay individual? New or casual members find gignatic 100+ pages threads intimidating and I personally find them really unreadable the way they are merged.

Well, I disagree with you. I'd rather see them all merged, than a forum full of potentially the same topic.

What thread are you talking about?

Threads are only merged for 2 reasons:

1. After an MMA event, the staff marks a thread "****all discussion of this topic goes here*******", and in that thread there is a note that says any threads other than this one will be merged.

2. Threads on the same subject, like if two threads were made about why Nog is an awesome guy, those two threads could be merged into 1, as it's the same general topic.

If a thread gets merged and you are unsure why, you can always PM someone on staff and ask, and you will be told why it was merged.

I am talking about exactly what I said in my post. Anyways it isn't a big deal, but I have no idea why the thread I was posting in got merged with the "all things Ander...". I mean technically any thread that has eithe rof their names could be put there right?

I was posting in a small thread regarding Anderson and his ability to speak english and it was merged with the "all things". Now instead of being able to check back in user cp on that specific topic I have to scan through many pages in a giant thread to find the conversation I was in.

Also, if I go away for a few days and come back it is very intimidating to be expcted to read 100+ pages of an all things. I usually just don't open them because I know my post is lost in like 20-40 pages of additional matterial creeated since I left.

Anyways this is just my opinion, not trying to criticize anyone here.

I just think it keeps topics organized in a more specific way, but I understand why some people feel it clutters the forum.

Agreed.....sometimes they shouldnt be merged just cuz its aout a fighter that there are a lot of threads about.....if there is a specific thing like Ape is saying it should be left, I find it hard to see the responses once this occurs....

There's got to be a 'complaint thread' we can merge this into.

That being said, I agree with the thread starter about the aggressive merging. I've had multiple discussions get lumped into the "***All things Anderson Silva VS Chael Sonnen***", despite being distinct discussions with their own merit. They will be lost to the wind.

M.C 07-30-2010 03:07 PM

Well, in the case of a thread about Anderson's english, it should not be merged in the "all things anderson vs. chael" thread.

The only threads that should be merged into such a thread, is all threads regarding Anderson vs. Chael. The thing is, that means ALL threads regarding Anderson vs. Chael. That means, if a thread is made that is called "can chael take anderson down?" that thread gets merged into the big A vs. C thread.

I don't really recall the Anderson english thread you are talking about, but the only reason why I could see it being merged is if the thread turned into a Anderson vs. Chael debate (many threads go from one topic to the next, happens all the time), or if the thread was about how Chael said Anderson could talk english and how he's going to beat him up, which starts the "well, anderson will destroy chael" and so on, so forth, and would be merged.

If neither happened, then yeah, it shouldn't have been merged and I would have no clue why it would be merged.

Either way it is no big deal. I just wanted to toss my personal vote against aggressive thread merging. :)

UrbanBounca 08-05-2010 04:07 PM

Speaking of merging, can someone merge all those Roger Huerta/street fight threads?
