Thank God for Groin Guards
I've got a funny story from training these past few days that just makes me thankful that I insist on wearing a cup during training. Here we go...
First story: On Tuesday we were going over single-stick work (defenses, disarms, follow-ups after the disarm, etc). Well after switching partners I'm working with one of the guys and he is having trouble with the sequence we were going over so I let him go over a few times.
All of a sudden, there's this huge "Knock" sound that fills the training area (there were only six of us there including our instructor). It sounds like drumstick hitting a hollow wood block. It was so loud everyone stopped and our instructor looks at us and asks, "What the hell was that?"
"That's the sound of Dave's stick hitting my cup." was how I answered.
Now the funniest part of that session is this: We switch partners again, and the owner of the place (my Gurong) walks in and looks over what we're doing. My partner isn't transitioning his stick work smoothly and comes over to show him how to do the sequence on me. Right after he begins working the sequence we all here the same "Knock" sound fill the room and everyone (except me) busts up.
Guro stops and asks, "What the hell was that?" I tap my cup indicating that he hit me there, and he replies "That's what you get for having wood in your pants while working out--you sicko!"
Second story: We doing ground work today (simple sweeps and passes). One of the guys I was rolling with was complaining how he banged had banged his knee while rolling. He went on to explain, "I think I'm cathing someone's cup on the pass."
I simply replied with, "That's exactly why I wear one."
Getting hit in the junk sucks. Whenever it happens, I'd rather be the guy saying, "Thank god I wore a cup." instead of being the guy saying, "I wish I wore a cup!"
