Puzzle mats?
Hi, I've been here for a bit, and I am wondering...
Are puzzle mats good for MMA sparring? People say it's alright, but wont you get some serious burn? And do they accept shock well?

we have these at my gym. They are good for some things, streching, standup....

but i wouldn't be doing big slams.

Well, this is for home use, so I guess I'll get some thick puzzle mats and rashguards. It'll probably be single leg/double leg takedowns and the occasion hipthrow, but since it'll be for sparring, my sparring partner and I wont have the "I have come to avenge my family" ferocity.

Thanks, but I'm still worried about the feel...Maybe I'm outdated with the material puzzle mats are made with but aren't they good with grip and frictional? Might make ground fighting odd.

I use puzzle mats for grappling. Too thin for takedowns and stuff. And sometimes they disconnect when your doing standup, for example if you plant and drive with your back foot for a punch or a shot. You can mess up your ankle.

I agree 100%. The puzzle mats are fairly stiff and can be very slippery as well. Also, if you don't have enough so they are wedged between 2 or more walls they have a tendancy to slide around which can cause you to slip. Also, if you step on the seam they tend to pop up and down and as stated before you can mess your ankle on the.

The Zebra mats are MUCH MUCH better and are great for grappling and standup.

puzzle mats are only for those on a serious budget. maybe like guys who train in their garage. but not in a professional environment.
