Mouth guard issues

I am about to start training in MT for getting back into shape reasons. I went out and got some sprawl shorts, cup, wraps and gloves. My issue right now is the mouth piece.
I went the cheap route with the mouth piece since i am just training and it will be a little bit if I ever start competing. The issue I am having is its making me gag. I put it in boiling water and cut it smaller and the same result. Its a single one that I got for a few bucks at a sports shop.

Does anyone else have this problem or know how to correct it? Thanks in advance!!!
