Grappling Dummy ??

I have been thinking of buying a grappling dummy to work on some stuff at home. I don't have a ton of room for weights or any large equipment so I have been looking to find something that I can get some serious training done from home in my time away from the gym and without a training partner. Is a grappling dummy worth the money or should I focus my attention elsewhere? Are there many workout routines that can be used on a grappling dummy in a small area like a 10'x10' room?

grappling dummy

Hey dude, about the grappling dummy. I actually have one from Ringside. ITs 120lbs so its heavy. They have several diffrent heights and weights
The thing about grappling dummies is you think you can do technique but in reality its not what you think. I use mine more for conditioning rather than techique. Moving a 120lb dummy and lifting it and doing striking and wrestling with it is way more useful then haveing it lay on you and trying to do armbars that are unrealistic. Don't get me wrong you can do some technique but not alot. Triangles are ackward, sweeps are too. If it doesnt bend at the knee then its kinda like grappling someone who does everything you don't want them to. There is a bubba dummy out there but they are expensive and i don't have any comments on them. But for the Price for one I think $400+ to me thats not worth it. Get a thai bag or a dummy and work wreslting and striking. Leave the technique for the gym or invest in some good instuctionals or grappling dvds

PS-if you don't want to spend the money on a dummy go to the junk yard and get an old tractor tire for conditioning. i have this to and it kicks my ass all over the place.

When you purchased it, does it come with instructional videos? Maybe it's just to heavy to execute proper technique. A friend of mine has one but i'm not sure what's it called. It comes with a video instruction to get the most out of it. I think it was called submission master dummy. something like that.

I don't know if I'd recommend using one. I can clean 200lbs and from my chest push it over my head. I by no means could this to a 150lbs guy. I could shoulder him or body lock and lift etc etc. My point is that these submissions are not difficult in and of themselves, they are difficult because some ass hole is resisting. Controlling a moving, defending opponent is the hard part. And IMO is the vastly important thing.

The greatest use I could see for such a doll would simply be practicing your movements, transitions and maybe explosive submissions you couldn't try rolling cause it's dangerous.

I'd say 6 months of practice with this doll and instructionals would be equivalent with 2 weeks of bjj in a real gym.

I agree but dummies can help you as a supplemental training right? a hundred armbars, triangles and chokes with a dummy would not hurt your game. Especially for me lol. I work 8 hours a day. If I cant go to the gym, I gotta have an alternative you know.

Grappling dummies are used to practice technique and repetition right? I think it could really help you with your game but when it comes to strength training well, that's another story. You could train with your submission master grappling dummy anytime and practice those mean moves but if you want raw strength, weight lifting is the answer to that.
